Runes
Runes form the foundation of the World, holding dominion over facets of it's existence. The 27 True Runes are the Jewels of the Sword and Shield which created the world, remnants of the great power of creation itself. These True Runes and their shards have mystified scholars with their diversity and obscurity.
Since the beginning of time, runes have been attaching themselves to humans and animals in our world. With these Runes attached, their hosts can perform great feats of magic or have other special abilities. When not attached to a life form however, Runes tend to do one of two things. Very rarely they will become some great monster of power representing the Rune they are. This is very rare however, and most often Runes without hosts form a powerful crystal around themselves; in this state, Runes are known as Orbs. While in the orb, the Rune is dormant. Only those who have studied the art of attaching Runes, known as Rune Sages, can remove Runes from Orbs and attach them to people. Rune sages can also remove runes, and turn them into back into orbs.
Not all Runes can be removed from their hosts, however. Many Runes, especially unique and rare runes, form powerful bonds with their hosts and become part of them. When this happens, even the most powerful Rune Sage is helpless to remove such a Rune.
Most organisms can't host more than three runes at once, though special techniques to do so have been rumored to exist. It's impossible to bear more than one True Rune at once. Runes attach themselves to their hosts in one of three places; the left hand, the right hand, and the forehead. The amount of Runes a person can attach to themselves depends on their mastery of magic forces; most people can only equip one rune, on their left hand. Those who are able to push their abilities father through training are able to attach a second rune to their right hand, though runes attached to the right hand are less potent than runes attached to the left hand. Only expert Rune Casters are able to attach Runes to the forehead; though many unique runes that are born on their hosts tend to be attached here as well.
