Bo Stern’s account of the war declared on her family the day after she celebrated her forty-fifth birthday demands to be read cover-to-cover, then slowly savored in weeks to come. The Bend, OR teaching pastor writes about the day her and her husband Steve met “…an enemy so fierce and foul…” they named him “Goliath.” Their opponent’s appropriate name forecast the difficult challenges that lie ahead. Where they would learn “…the most beautiful things come out of the hardest times.” Their yet unfinished true story is told in—
Eight months and multiple tests later the doctor gave their “Goliath” a name— “Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis—Lou Gehrig’s disease” more commonly known as ALS. The terminal motor neuron disease would affect Steve’s muscles and eventually his ability to eat, swallow, speak or breathe. The devastating diagnosis was “…an emotional and psychological minefield…” that sent Bo to her knees with the enormity of what she,.es image catalog prodesc asicspain170107 asics-sneakers-cheaponitsuka-tiger-vegan.jpg, her beloved husband and family faced.
Emotionally charged decisions,http: www.ajugarbingo.es image catalog prodesc reboldktenis adidas-bounceasics-gel-enduro.jpg, whether to pay for an expensive drug that might “buy Steve an extra three months of life “or how to “bank” Steve’s voice for use with a “speech device” and when to meet the “director of the ALS center” became primary concerns.
Though their story is devastating, Bo sends a message of hope as she recounts “…countless miracle moments of unexpected joy and supernatural strength.” Moments she came to call “supernatural notes” of encouragement from God who extended His Hand through family and friends. Perhaps most important were the moments God showed up in the midnight hours when it was just Bo and her “…tears and fears…what ifs and why me’s.”
The first half will bring tears as readers learn how Bo discovered “Beauty in the Hard Places.” The second part is about the strategies Bo used to grow” stronger through every battle. Chapters end with reflective questions, “Thoughts worth pondering” and actions “Worth Doing.” The book, available as an eBook or paperback,, concludes with categorized “Scriptures for Battle.”
Bo writes with warm authenticity as she relates an amazing account of her walk through the “valley of the shadow of death” with Christ by her side. blog
'Seeing Through the Fog: Hope When Your World Falls Apart’ by Ed Dobson http: ‘Seeing Through the Fog: Hope When Your World Falls Apart’ by Ed Dobsonfalls-apart-by-ed-dobson
‘Beautiful Battlefields’ by Bo Stern, NavPress, 2013, 192 Pages, 978-1612913193,, $14.99
Twitter: GailWelborn
FaceBook: GailWelborn
LinkedIn: www.linkedin,Book Reviews—“Gail’s Bookshelf” www,#gail
On this day before Santa Claus Day,.es image catalog prodesc asicspain170107 asicsstyleshoestiger-shoes-women.jpg, it is appropriate to remember the reason for the season. The Gospel of Matthew tells us that after Yeshua was born in Bethlehem,http: www.ajugarbingo.es image catalog prodesc reboldktenis pelotasdefutbolnikebotas-futbol-nike.jpg, Magi from the east came to see him. Who were these people and how many were there?
The Magi were a priestly class of the Zoroastrian religion. It is interesting that G-d never condemns the Zoroastrian faith. In fact the leader of the Zoroastrian faith in the time of Isaiah was called Christ. Cyrus, the Christ,.es image catalog prodesc uploadsa air_jordan_kids nike_zoom_lebron lebron_xii_12 nikeplus11nikeware.jpg, was the High Priest and King of the Persian Empire. See Isaiah 45:1. These priests were adepts in astrology and astronomy,a science that at this time was unified, and it is from their name that we get the word Magic. The Zoroastrians believed that there would be a Messiah come to aid them in their constant war with Ahriman,.es image catalog prodesc 9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95 v tigershoe43onitsukal.jpg, the Devil. By use of astrology, they came to believe that a King had been born in Judaea that might be that person. They came to worship him.
The idea that there were three Magi comes from a passage in Isaiah 60 in which it says:
"For the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you,, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of YHVH." 60:5-6.
So one after Matthew was especially keen on proving that Yeshua met the prophetic expectations of Scripture. He knew of this prophecy and so invents a visit from the Magi. He sees Midian and Ephah and Sheba in the passage and therefore invents three Wise Men. They bring the wealth of nations,http: www.ajugarbingo.es image catalog prodesc reboldktenis nike-delta-forcenike-futbol-sala.jpg, namely, gold and frankincense. The myrrh was added to prophetically recall Yeshua's coming passing. So the gold represented his Kingship; the frankincense represented his Priesthood; and myrrh both his death and his Prophetic triumph.
The great Catholic seer of the nineteenth century, Anna Katherine Emmerich saw nine wise men coming to see Yeshua. Nine was a divine number to the Zoroastrians and so it makes sense.
Isaiah later on in Chapter 60 says: "Foreigners shall rebuild your walls, and their kings shall be your attendants; ... " 60:10. In art and history, the Magi are seen attending Yeshua and so they were called kings to fulfill the prophecy.
Did these people really come? No one could know for sure, but there is no mention by the Romans of visitors from Parthia,, the Roman archenemy,to the court of Herod. There is no evidence in any contemporary historian of their visit. If they came, they came quietly.
The Feast Day of the Wise Men is called Epiphany because it was the day upon which Yeshua's Kingship and Divinity were acknowledged in legend by these representatives of the world. Traditionally,, Epiphany is the twelfth day after Christmas.
It’s spring, and not unlike the springtime Iranian post-election protests in 2009 and the “Arab Spring” protests that has swept across many countries in the Middle East, the Occupy and 99% movements have again picked up momentum with a series of demonstrations. Yesterday, protesters gathered at two Bank of America locations in Berkeley and Oakland to speak out against the corporation’s policies and to encourage people to “move your money to community banks and credit unions”. The protests took place at the BoA branches on 2129 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, and at 300 Lakeside Drive in Oakland.
As noted in a previous Oakland Baha’i Examiner article, the Baha’i Writings discourage the people of the world from participating in what has become the most common method of fighting against social and economic injustice: mass protests and strikes. These well-known and utilized methods have demonstrated a degree of effectiveness, and changes have been made. In the 19thcentury,slavery was abolished and women’s right to vote was established. The dawn of the 20thcentury saw the nascent recognition of the rights of working people to perform their duties in an environment free of hazards. However,, these reformations were not without detractors who felt they were entitled to what was the status quo,, and resentments simmered as the years went by. One of very important aspects of social economic change was not addressed—the transformation of hearts. Members of the powerful and wealthy class begrudging agreed to the changes, but harbored unexpressed anger toward those who had the temerity to oppose the manner in which they had been accustomed to conducting their lives. Inevitably, they sought ways to undermine or completely eliminate whatever social gains had been made by those who were not members of their class. (For an excellent overview of these various changes made in the past four centuries,http: www.ajugarbingo.es image catalog prodesc reboldktenis nike-nuevaszapatos-deportivos-reebok.jpg, please read “A Historical Primer on Economic (In) Equality”,, a document created by the Southern Poverty Law Center for middle and high school students, but presents the information in a thorough yet concise manner that adult readers can appreciate.)
The result has been evident over the years: as a result of the abolition of slavery,Jim Crow laws were created; the battles for rights on the part of labor, women and other groups has resulted in contrasting laws and practices that has made life intolerable for those affected. Thus a pattern of actions and reactions has emerged, most recently with the onset of the Occupy 99 Percent movements in response to the social economic policies of the national and local governments.
Is there an end to this pattern of action and reaction? There is,if mankind can realize and accept it. In the book,
< blockquote>The speed in which these measures detailed by Abdu’l-Baha’ seem attainable, but considering the amount of anger,self-importance and intransigence demonstrated by the participants of the current social economic discussion, these changes will be long delayed until contrary characteristics are attained and become the standard of society.
