Father Leo MacDonell was born June 21, 1921 in Green Valley, Ontario, the oldest of ten children. His parents were John Alex (Banker) MacDonell and Christena (Shoemaker) MacDonell.

The family moved to St. Raphaels in 1924 where he received his education, graduating from Iona Academy. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 31 1947, in St. Finnan's Cathedral, Alexandria where he served in a number of parishes in the Diocese until his death on January 16, 1983.

At a very early age, his musical talent was evident. He was an accompanist, often playing with Rev. John MacPhail. Together they entertained at many local functions, especially parish socials and concerts.
