Jimi Hendrix
Woodstock, 1969
from GuitarGeek:
- 1968 Olympic White Fender Stratocaster (w/ light-gauge Fender "Rock N' Roll" strings (10-38) and stock pickups; tuned a half-step down) > Vox wah > Dallas Arbiter Fuzzface > Univox Uni-Vibe > two Marshall 100W Super Lead Plexi heads into Marshall 4x12 stacks
Other
- "It seems that Jimi almost always used Fender Rock 'N' Roll light-gauge strings (.010, .013, .015, .026, .032, .038), although he might have used Esquier strings a couple of times, as he endorsed their strings during late 1968 in some advertisements." - Jimi Hendrix: Electric Gypsy by Harry Shapiro & Caesar Glebbeek
Noel Redding
Thanks to this site.
Basses
- 1965 Gibson EB-2
- Single-pickup, sunburst. Borrowed from Chas Chandler, and used from his first audition for Hendrix on September 29, 1966, to the recording sessions for the "Hey Joe" single, to mid-February 1967, when he purchased the bass below. Redding owned another EB-2, with two pickups; no photos are known to exist of Noel playing this particular bass.
- 1964 Fender Jazz Bass
- Sunburst; replaced the EB-2. Redding used the Jazz Bass for the rest of his career with the Experience. In January 1968, he removed the pickup cover and bridge cover. In the 1980s, he sold his Jazz Bass (in poor condition at the time) for UK £10,000 to US collector Bob Terry, who himself sold it again a few years later.
- Fender Bass VI six-string
- Redding owned at least two of these. One was used as early as 1966, and the other was purchased in mid-1967.
- 1967 Hagstrom eight-string
- Used for some of the Axis: Bold As Love sessions and also for a few of the JHE concerts during 1967.
- Fender Mustang Bass
- Seen around 1967. Not known if this was used live.
Amplification
- two Sunn 2000S heads > wall of Sunn cabs, mostly 2x15s
- Redding almost always used Sunn amps, from around April 1968 onwards. I believe this was his typical setup.
Other
- Rotosound Swing Bass strings
Mitch Mitchell
- Drums:
- Premier (circa 1967): 20x14 kick, 14x8 rack tom ("The Tuna Can"), 14x14 and 16x16 floor toms, 2000 metal snare
- Ludwig Silver Sparkle (circa 1967/8): 22x14 kick, 13x9 tom, 14x14 and 16x16 floor toms, Ludwig Supra-Phonic snare (classic jazz setup)
- Ludwig (circa 1969): two 24" kicks, 12x8 and 13x9 toms, 16x16 and 18x16 floor toms, Ludwig Supra-Phonic snare
- Gretsch kit: used at Isle of Wight; in the same setup as the '69 Ludwig double bass kit above.
- Cymbals:
- Mitchell's cymbal setup varied. Generally, he played Zildjian A's, but he's also been seen with 602s, Giant Beats, and Turkish K's at some point. He usually played 15" hats and a riveted ride (20" or 22"). Crashes, rides, and crash/rides of various, unconfirmed sizes and setups.
