Shining Basalt stands at 5'7", carrying herself as anyone born to power would. Her skin is the color of her namesake while her eyes and shoulder-length hair are a somewhat jarring orange, not unlike the color of molten metal. Her clothes are well-made and befitting one of her standing, often covered by the synthetic leather buff jacket she wears. A white jade reaver daiklaive hangs at her side, a prayer to the Great Maker carved into both sides of the blade in Old Realm.

Shining Basalt began her life, as all Mountain Folk do, under the mountain. Emerging from the jade egg as an Adamant Prince, her education in the ways of the Council of 10,000 began in earnest. Unlike some of her fellows, however, she expressed no small bit of interest in those who lived on the mountain rather than under it. Her teachers assumed that she would grow out of this rather odd obsession, and she did somewhat. She settled into the role of the ruling class of the Mountain Folk, occasionally venturing into Quiet Meru to observe the mortals who lived there. During one of those excursions, her life changed irrevocably.

Daril Ratnendra, a jeweler from Chiaroscuro who Exalted as a Twilight when he completed his master's project at the academy, had only arrived at Meru the month before. Basalt saw him one day as he walked though Quiet Meru and, despite herself, found herself attracted to the young Southern man. The two began slowly, first talking over tea in a small teahouse in Quiet Meru. In time their feelings for each other developed and, with his Lunar mate's blessing, the two began a rather fruitful relationship. The two Exalts officially acted as patrons for Basalt, allowing her access to the surface world that very few of her fellows were allowed. And, for a time, things were happy.

Of course, that Calibration night changed everything. As a relatively young Solar, Daril did not show any of the signs of madness his elders were afflicted with. Nevertheless, he was slain during the banquet all the same. Both Basalt and Janema were heart-broken; while Janema worked with the nascent Night Sky Regime (albeit begrudgingly) to help rebuild what remained on the Isle, Basalt returned to Urvar, both to work with her people and to have some time to herself to ask the Maker why such a thing had to occur.

Basalt kept in touch with Janema over the next eight years, and it was through her that the Artisan learned of the rebellion building against the regime. Basalt returned to the surface and began working with the group, the memory of the sweet young Twilight she fell in love with a forge-hot flame within her stony chest.
