Here’s a general rule: The smaller the map, the better the map. Battalion is a turn based game. That means that every player’s turn takes, on average, around 2 minutes. If it takes 7 turns for any significant battle to take place on a large map, that’s up to 28 minutes before any action takes place! Yes, early turns probably don’t take that long since one tends to have less units, but any unnecessary waste of time should be removed in a map. Don’t have a bunch of buildings near your starting factory that need to be captured unless there is a clear strategic reason for this (for example, giving the player to capture the factory or better placed city would be a reason not to follow this philosophy). It’s also not a good idea to have a long strip of relatively unimportant land that all units need to travel over. These tend to inhibit a quick victory once one side gets a clear advantage, which is always a sign of a bad map.
