[edit] Four Player Maps

Four player maps are actually quite similar to two player maps. They can easily be divided symmetrically in order to create relatively straightforward maps. One of the main concerns of a four player map is to keep the battlefield small. Since a four player maps means that a player has to wait for three other players to finish their turns, large four player maps quickly become very boring. In general, four player maps should be kept small and to the point in order to produce the greatest playability.

One of the unique aspects of a four player map is the ability to create a 2v2 map. 2v2 maps are a great way for a map maker to force one player on each team into creating specialized units that on their own would be ineffective, but with an ally’s support can be devastating. One idea is to create separate battlefields for each ally with only limited movement in between them. Another idea is to force one player to become a naval power by only giving him a Harbor and another player to become only an air threat by giving him only Airports. This creates a nice blend of game play that is not found in a traditional two player map.
