I'd like this wiki to become a resource for finding out about local groups which are using dance and movement as a spiritual practice. Please add your own contributions, especially details of events and regular groups you know about. If you don't want to edit the wiki yourself, please send the information to Bob@Simplicity.freeserve.co.uk

What’s It All About?
Many people have found movement and dance practices helpful in their lives. Because of this many different movement and dance practices over the years have been used for spiritual development. They can be used to maintain a sense of equilibrium, in a similar way to 'still' meditation practices. Movement and dance can also be used to open yourself up to new ideas, to explore new and old emotional states.
It’s a way to let go and find your own dance, that which you want to express. To explore the different sides of who you are, to lose your inhibitions in the joy of dancing. The only way to really understand it is to go and dance. It's something very personal that isn't easily explained in words.
Some specific types of movement and dance are mentioned below, and there are links to related web sites. There are also less formal events which I've called 'Barefoot Boogies', which may incorporate elements of the more structured forms of movement and dance.
First Steps?
The main thing about most of these dance forms is that there are no steps to learn! But in any case, the first step is to go to an event or class! How many steps you take after that is up to you!
Barefoot Boogie
Some of us just wanna dance like nobody is watching!
These events are mostly free-form, where people can dance in an atmosphere which is smoke, alcohol and drug free. You should be able to expect a friendly and safe environment, where people go to enjoy dancing in any way that they feel like expressing themselves. You may or may not meet new friends, but unlike some other forms of social dance, there is no expectation that you are there mainly for the purpose of getting laid.

Let's take it beyond the dance floor!
Five Rhythms
5 Rhythms(TM) is a form of ‘free dance’ stemming from the work of Gabrielle Roth. The Five Rhythms, Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness form the Wave, a dance form that crosses the boundaries between art, therapy, healing and spiritual impulse.
This is a simple and potentially profound movement practice. You can't get it wrong, or right, for that matter - it's a chance to explore for yourself. Everyone is welcome, whatever limitations or experience you have.
Trance Dance
Trance Dance is an 'inner journey' and the foundation stone of many other dance practices. It has been part of shamanic cultures for centuries.
Bodywork
The body is a physical expression of who we are as individuals and what we have been through. Working with the body can contact the deeply-held feelings, emotions and beliefs which lie below our day-to-day understanding.
Deep Bodywork invites you on a journey into your body by using attention, awareness, breath and touch. It helps you to find a way to listen to your body’s messages, and to gain a deeper understanding of yourself. It can help release old patterns that hold us back, and liberate energy for new movement and growth.
