Many people have found movement and dance practices helpful in their lives.  Because of this many different movement and dance practices over the years have been used for spiritual development.  They can be used to maintain a sense of equilibrium, in a similar way to 'still' meditation practices.  Movement and dance can also be used to open yourself up to new ideas, to explore new and old emotional states.

It’s a way to let go and find your own dance, that which you want to express.  To explore the different sides of who you are, to lose your inhibitions in the joy of dancing.  The only way to really understand it is to go and dance.  It's something very personal that isn't easily explained in words.

Some specific types of movement and dance are mentioned below, and there are links to related web sites.  There are also less formal events which I've called 'Barefoot Boogies', which may incorporate elements of the more structured forms of movement and dance.

The main thing about most of these dance forms is that there are no steps to learn! But in any case, the first step is to go to an event or class!  How many steps you take after that is up to you!

These events are mostly free-form, where people can dance in an atmosphere which is smoke, alcohol and drug free. You should be able to expect a friendly and safe environment, where people go to enjoy dancing in any way that they feel like expressing themselves. You may or may not meet new friends, but unlike some other forms of social dance, there is no expectation that you are there mainly for the purpose of getting laid.

5 Rhythms(TM) is a form of ‘free dance’ stemming from the work of Gabrielle Roth.

The Five Rhythms, Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness form the Wave, a dance form that crosses the boundaries between art, therapy, healing and spiritual impulse.

This is a simple and potentially profound movement practice.  You can't get it wrong, or right,
