July 2006 - Applying for a Visa

A visa (short for carta visa, literally: "the document having been seen") is a document issued by a country giving a certain individual permission to formally request entrance to the country during a given period of time. In most countries, such as the United States, it simply indicates eligibility to enter the country and doesn't guarantee permission at the port of entry.

Security clearance procedures are often part of the visa approval process. Recent changes in the U.S visa laws and regulations involving stricter security measures and more thorough checks have increased the amount of time it can take to get a visa. Most non-U.S. citizens who wish to study in the United States will seek an F-1 (non-immigrant) student visa, but there are other visa types that are sometimes authorized for this purpose.
