The Great Wastes

From Eran

Contents

Overview

The Great Wastes is probably the most hostile terrain in all of Éran and forms an effective boundary between Éran and the lands to the south. But if the terrain itself did not constitute a formidable barrier itself, the inhabitants most certainly do. The Lizard men of the Yin-Nazul are not only the masters of the jungles few men could hope to sustain themselves in, but thriving and have developed a powerful and distinctively hostile civilization there. Not much better is the Empire of the Snake in the Serpent Desert. Though the empire has fallen into decay now and the snake-people scattered, they remain the dominant force in the desert and are possibly even more aggressive and hostile to intruders than before.

DM Notes: Although some observers have guessed at it, very few know that the in the southern joungles, the Yin-Nazul have grown to become one of the most industrious and annd advanced civilisations in Éran. Although not quite at the same level as Errion and Brennél in terms of size and population, the lizardfolk have a crucial advantage over the rest of Éran. They are a highly organised and deeply specialised people, dedicated to one thing: Warfare and conquest. All lizardfolk receive rigurous training in one field or another somehow related to warfare and the Yin-Nazul have now developed a highly functional hierarchy to regulate their armies and society that enables them to act with devastasting efficiency. As such, the Yin-Nazul pose perhaps the greatest military threat to the stability of Éran today. The reason Éran has felt little of the threat from the lizardfolk is that they have hitherto been engaged in a campaign of conquest ahgainst their arch nemesis, the snake people of the Serpent Desert. When they have established a solid grip on the desert, and all signs point to that happening sooner than later, they will turn their attention to other regions for conquest. The far south is probably too advanced and strong for the Yin-Nazul to take on for now, but the fragmented lands of south-east éran will no doubt prove ripe for picking for the lizard armies.

Unknown to all but the highest powers among their race, the Lizardfolk have in fact struck a secret alliance with the Saurians of the Dread Sea to give them free pssage across the ocean to attack the humans on the other side. Should the east succumb to the Lizardfolk when the time comes, the west may think itself safeguarded by the ocean that has always divided the two regions. But the Yin-Nazul abide by no such limitations in the plans for conquest.
