Looking at Maps -- Due Sunday March 5, 5pm

Using the online map source from National Geographic, found at MapMachine.

Answer the following questions about major ecosystems, soils, climates, and populations.

There are three zoom modes to use to answer these questions; world-view, US-view, and Southern Illinois view. You may copy this page's source to start your work if you like.

Click "Major Habitat types"

1) Do these major ecosystems of the world match what you have already learned so far about biomes?

OK

Yes these ecosystems match what we have learned previously. We know that biomes can be similar and very different and be right next to each other.

2) What does National Geographic call these regions? What region(s) are in Southern Illinois?

OK

Illinois is a temperate grassland, savanna, and, shrublands it also contains temperate broadleaf and mixed forest with snow, ice, and rock these last ones can be found in Southern Illinois.

Click "Vegetation"

3) What vegetation types are in Southern Illinois?

OK

Broad-leafed deciduous forest with evergreen elements, sclerophllous evergrenn forest and shrubland, and forest-steppe and steppe with subtropical elements.

Click "Natural Landscapes"

4) What landscape types are in Southern Illinois?

OK

It has both forest-steppe and intrazonal.

Click "Soil Types"

5) What soil types are in Southern Illinois?

OK

Here we see moderate, humid; moderate, various; warm, very humid; and warm, various.

Click "Population Density"

6) What are the population densities in Southern Illinois?

OK

The population densities range from 1 to 10; 10 to 25;25 to 50 and 50 to 100 and in the St. Louis area 100 to 200.

7) What are the population densities in the Everglades region?

OK

It ranges from 1 to 10; 10 to 25; and 25 to 50.

8) What are the population densities Near New Orleans?

OK

New Orleans is in the range of 25 to 100.

9) How do each of these poulation densities compare? Do you think they correctly depict the poulations in those areas?

OK

Most of these areas have the same population. However in certain spots New Orleans has more population densities than the Everglades and Illinois. For the most part yes they do but Southern Illinois has more in certain areas because of college students and they did not take this into account.

Click "Flood Regions"

10) Near New Orleans, compare this map to the population densities and explain what you find.

OK

This whole area is prone to flooding. The population map shows a high rate of population even though the flood damage could be severe.

11) Overview: Pick a region-Southern Illinois, New Orleans, or Everglades and discuss the possible problems of assigning a single zone type to each of these smaller regions by comparing each of the map types above.

OK

One single zone type would give you a false idea of the region's soil type, population density, flood region, vegetation, and natural landscape. Southern Illinois varies in all of these aspects. Businesses wishing to locate to the area may be given an unrealistic view of the region. People hoping to build certain types of homes may find the area undesirable. Farmers considering a specific crop may find the soil unsuitable, even though other comparable factors may make Southern Illinois look perfect for that crop.
