Matthew Richard Benton was born on October 1, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois to Steven Richard Benton and Nancy Lee Elia, both of Norwich, New York. Matthew was the first child of the family and also has a younger sister, Melissa Kathleen Benton. He currently resides in Rochester, New York.

Matthew is a graduate of the State University of New York at Oswego where he majored in Public Justice and History.

When Matthew was about 5 years old, his parents went to Australia and his baby-sitters were his grandparents, Papa and Nena Elia. He remembers that he was very familiar with the house appliances as he taught Nena how to use the microwave. Also, in Naperville, IL, when his Papa and Nena visited, they went to a haunted house. “I still remember that haunted house well. I convinced Papa to come into the house with me and my sister and me ran off. At the end, there was a slide that everyone had to go down to exit the haunted house. My sister and me went down first and Nena was waiting. She asked where Papa was and a few seconds later, we all see Papa flying down the slide with his hat falling off. We laughed the whole way home.”

Matthew remembers playing a game invented by Papa called “Boo-Boo.” This was introduced during one of their visits to their condo in Florida. “Boo-Boo” was a game where everyone had to be really quiet, and if someone talked or made a noise, they’d lose. Matthew was the frequent loser to this game as he was a chatter mouth in his early years.

Papa and Nena also taught Matthew how to play cards. “I remember them teaching me how to play Go Fish.” As Matthew got older, he learned how to play many other card games, like Kings in the Corner, Golf, Pitch, and his personal favorite, Euchre.
