[edit] Appearance

Greta is fair in every physical sense of the word. Of course, there are a few things she was born with which she believes take away from her charm- chubby, blotchy cheeks, an ability to gain ten pounds in a week and a simpering look about her that results in very few people taking her seriously- but everything that can be washed, tidied, primped and polished has been. Greta's black eyes contrast with her wispy, white-blonde hair, giving her a compassionate air. This air has garnered her a reputation as a motherly-type, nurturing and long-suffering. She's the friend that everyone brings their problems to, and while she'll hug them and maybe whisper a few words of consolation, most of the time she's wondering why this always happens to her and why, if they're all so upset about these problems, don't they spend more time fixing them than complaining about them? Even her youngest, she thinks, knows better than that...

For a woman, Greta is quite tall and sturdy. She wouldn't be considered overweight, but she has enough bulk to her to be a force to be reckoned with. And never in her life has she ever been referred to as "dainty", something she wishes dearly for. Most of the time, Greta feels awkward and gargantuan and does her best to appear small, balling herself up when seated or hunching when standing. She dresses plainly and in the style of most middle-class Landisians when allowed to choose for herself. In Archades, however, her husband's household has chosen her clothes and she generally ends up going out looking like a proper Archadian lady.

[edit] History

Raised by her father, a wealthy but primarily typical Landisian merchant-farmer, and her mother, an Archadian immigrant with a long family history, Greta has managed to cast a blind eye to the political troubles surrounding her. Her elder sister’s husband is fast friends with the consul of Landis, while her brother serves as an underground member of the Landis independence movement. Greta and her younger brother were spared political minds and like Landis just the way it is, colonized or not. Always hushed or sent out of the room when important things were being discussed, Greta’s trusting nature was infused with a belief that, despite attacks or battles on the border, nothing was wrong in Landis that patience wouldn’t fix.

Wild and happy, Annegret grew up on the fon Kahn ancestral farm, learning very little of anything. Her mother instructed her regularly on etiquette, as she was most assuredly going to be married to a proper Archadian man someday, but Annegret never put her lessons to much practice. She rode chocobos, climbed trees, tortured the local boys until the age of 18, when she and her 7 year-old brother were sent to live with their mother’s matron sister in Archades. Wendel began his education at the Akademy and Annegret was dragged about by her aunt to all the most exclusive parties. In the heart of the empire, they were safe and Annegret’s parents had one less thing to worry about.

Manners were once again drilled into Annegret’s head, this time by her much sterner, much less practical aunt, Lydil. Now, if she misspoke to someone of rank, she was lucky if the slight was forgotten in a month. Slowly, Annegret learned to hide behind a mask of propriety when she wasn’t around like-minded people. It wasn’t long before she was turning heads left and right and, at 19, she was married to the brilliant researcher, Mr. Paulin Penighen. A timid, gentle man, Annegret liked him well enough, even loved him for some of his more ridiculous traits, and found little to fault married life for. At 21, she bore Paulin their first child, a son, and two sisters followed fast in his tracks. As Paulin had lost his first wife and son in childbirth, nothing made him happier than to finally have his own family.

Recently, after the birth of her second daughter, people began to whisper of Annegret’s lack of education. She could read and write and do simple sums in her head, but she lacked any real culture. At the time, her husband gently suggested she go to the Akademy herself, despite being much older than most of the student body. To stop the gossip and sneers, Annegret agreed and is starting to find that she likes school. She took her habitually bad health as an indication that she had talent in black magick, though so far she’s only proved herself wrong. And been mistaken for an instructor seven times. And been called ‘mother’ by her classmates twice. Her younger brother is mortified and avoids being seen in public with her at all costs.

[edit] Personality

Keywords: Warm, modest, trusting, absent minded, guileless, conservative, undisciplined, careless of etiquette, impatient, giving, easily flattered, protective, moody, hedonistic, gullible, sincere, optimistic, opinionated, moralistic, naive.

Unpolished and unapologetic, Greta is the "country girl" most Archadians have nightmares about. She oscillates between brutal honesty ('your hat looks like a chocobo has just died on your head!') to ineptly lying through her teeth ('Why would anyone care that you've been married six times? It shows dedication!') and is therefore offended if she's called either insensitive or non-confrontational. Greta is most certainly not the latter, she just sometimes prefers to put her good mood before the truth. And if that results in someone embarrassing themselves, well, she'll feel guilty about it later!

Greta doesn't believe in wearing her heart on her sleeve, but that doesn't keep her from doing it anyway. She'd like to be graceful and restrained like all those classy Archadian women, but she's too easily excited or insulted. Her emotional openness was always counted as a blessing in Landis, but the further she gets from home the more she wishes she could just clam up sometimes and not feel anything at all.

Thoroughly a middle child, if Greta is being ignored she will act out in a big way. Usually, she says something ridiculous or becomes overly-dramatic about a small health problem. Or she might flirt a little, but that's only if she's feeling particularly daring! She's got a healthy fear of sex that's been drilled into her head by her Landisian upbringing. Getting a man to pay attention to Greta is the only sure-fire way of making her go speechless.

Though she hasn't been well-educated by Archadian standards, Greta is of above-average intelligence. She's very good at learning through doing and after a few months' worth of practice, she's a fair hand at whatever she sets her mind to. She's terribly inarticulate, though, and her grammar can be rather crass, her husband tells her, but she's always trying to improve herself. And, in matters of the heart, there are few people who can declare their love with words better than Greta can express it with her actions.
