The Djvu file format gives new life to our paper books.

It's the easiest way of exchange, storage and viewing of scanned books.

Now I will explain, in short, how are these files produced:

We assume that we have in the beginning:

  • a 2-color book with only letters, digits and formulas
  • a multicolor book with illustrations - a magazine or a newspaper
  • a jpeg,gif or a pdf - like files which you want to compress with djvu

Short Version

  • you scan the book - a good contrast is important - experiment with the scan wizard of your WinXP
  • with djvu small you encode into Djvu - try different profiles of encoding in order to get the smallest file with a good quallity , of course

Djvu_small is the best and easiest solution for me (and you) - with quallity of encoding in mind - I tried about 10 other ...

  • You are ready!
  • With WinDjView you can view your Djvu. If you wish tell your browser to use WinDjview.
  • Some info about your Djvu browser plugin (for IE and Mozilla just download and start it; for Opera - read below):

Go to Lizardtech and download the installation file for your OS.

A folder named "DjVu Control" will be placed under "Program Files/LizardTech" by default in Windows. Copy the file "npdjvu.dll" from this folder to Opera's "Program/Plugins" folder and restart Opera.
