Background and Personality
Hana is a shinigami assigned to the 4th division, as his ability to heal has placed him. Most of the other divisions despise the 4th, for their combat-unreadiness and perceived weakness as compared to the rest of the Gotei 13.
Not much is known about his history prior to his first appearance where he has attained the 7th seat of the division, and is the 14th squad leader. He would have attended the Academy to become a shinigami, as per normal, but nothing is set down about his time there or if any of the current members of the Gotei 13 were his classmates. Or indeed, how long he has been a shinigami or his history beforehand.
<br?Hana is a very nervous, somewhat clumsy, and overly naive person, but has a outwardly cheerful disposition and a deep caring for other's suffering. Although his nature leads him to often being bullied by others. However often he is duped or made fun of, he never seems to hold a grudge, merely laughing it off self-effacingly.
During the Soul Society arc, he is taken as a hostage by Ichigo and Ganju, but soon becomes their ally. He cares for Rukia, and doesn't want to see her executed. When he was assigned to clean her cell, Hana spoke briefly with her and he was impressed by her gentleness and kindness, and grew to admire her. Through his talk with her, he learned of Ichigo and the others, and her time in the living world.
Hana led Ichigo and Ganju to where Rukia was being held, and healed their injuries along the way. His healing ability is by far his greatest asset. He also possesses a zanpakuto, but he often misplaces it because he has hardly an occasion to use it.

Intrigued by Rukia's descriptions of life on Earth, Hana decides he wishes to experience it for himself. And the major focus of Rukia's stories was her time in Ichigo's high school. Since Hana looks a bit too old to be attending high school, he has decided that a university is the next best thing.
Relationships
Legato Bluesummers - His lover, although the relationship between the two is an odd one at best. His love for the other is honest and sincere, if a bit uncertain. They encountered one another during a chance meeting over the network, which caused Hana to hurry to Legato's side in order to heal him. The process weakened Hana a great deal and almost killed him, a fact that he shares with no one. Since then, the two have been inseparable. It began as a Master/Servant relationship, but evolved over time into something more profound.
Zidane Tribal - Hana's roommate; the two share a very easy bond. Both of them are of a cheerful nature and each helps to bolster the other and keep spirits high. The friendship is one that Hana treasures dearly.
Cloud Strife - His close friend and a person he looks to as a sort of 'big brother' type figure. Whenever he has a real problem, Cloud is usually the one he approaches for advice.
Axel - Another person who has taken the 'big brother' role for Hana; it's Hana's mission in life to get as many hugs from Axel as possible.
[[Akito] - One of Hana's first friends at Desai, and remains a person who he treasures dearly; he takes Akito's words seriously, and loves him without reserve.
Agito - The other side of Akito's personality; Hana doesn't know what to make of him at the best of times, but he has helped him out, so he respects Agito, even if he fears him slightly.
Tseng - One of his patients and a close friend, although they've only come to know each other recently, Hana took to him immediately and trusts him.
Matsumoto Rangiku - A friend and someone he considers an ally.
Riku - A close friend of Hana's -- that is, until recently, when Riku began showing an altogether different side. Hana now keeps his distance, worried about his friend, but not sure how to cope with it, especially after Riku has threatened him and others.
Fai D. Flowright - Friends, although their interaction has mostly been via the network.
L - A person Hana has decided to befriend, mostly because L seems to have some connection to Ichigo.
