| - | Urahara is a free-spirited and carefree kind of guy. He's very laid-back and goofy fellow, and doesn't come off as a very serious character. However, behind his front of a friendly and perverted store owner of a humble shop lies a very serious guy, one masked in mystery. Underneath it all, he's actually very wise and holds a wealth of knowledge in his what it appears to be a diseased little brain. Urahara's quite the genius, having invented various devices all of which have helped the shinigami in one way or another, and continues to develop such products. He possesses the ability to accurately read people, carefully analyzing their reactions to certain situations, and uses this knowledge to manipulate them into getting what he wants. Urahara can also be deceptive, acting like he's clueless about certain things when he's actually quite knowledgeable. When presented with a question dead on that he doesn't really wish to respond to, he tries to find some way to avoid it completely. He's also quite secretive, not divulging any information that he feels he doesn't need to, and is thus why people don't know that much about him and comes off as a very mysterious and enigmatic figure. Despite everything, Urahara is sympathetic to the plights of others. He helps them whenever they come to him for assistance, which is quite often, and is very forgiving. He also carries around a bit of guilt with him for the mistakes he made in past, and deeply regrets them.

| - | Not much is actually known about Urahara's past. While it's common knowledge that he was once the captain of the Twelfth division of the Gotei-13, and the founder of the Research and Development Bureau, the rest of it lies in mystery. While Urahara served as the head of Research and Development Bureau, he spent much of his time sitting in the lab, inventing various things with his genius. His inventions managed to revolutionize all of Soul Society, many of them helping to aid shinigami in their battle against hollows, malevolent spirits who devoured the souls of innocent spirits, alive and dead alike. Some of Urahara's inventions caused much controversy within Soul Society. One of these items was the famous Hogyoku, which allowed shinigami to attain the powers of a hollow and vice versa, surpassing the limitations of their own power, and gaining a new and incredible power unseen of in the history of Soul Society. Since this device was a very dangerous object, indeed, its creation ultimately led to Urahara's exile from Soul Society and into the real world.

| - | Once in the real world, Urahara set up a small, humble little shop called the 'Urahara Shoten' in the small town of Karakura, Japan. He used the shop as means to supply shinigami with any goods they might need. He still keeps in contact with Soul Society however, receiving shipments of good to sell to the shinigami currently occupying in the real world. At the shop who work alongside Urahara is Tessai and two youngsters by the name of Ururu and Jinta. They live and work at the shop, assisting Urahara in day-to-day activities involving the store. One of Urahara's biggest clients is Kuchiki Rukia, a female shinigami who frequently payed visits to his little store.

| - | Not to long ago, Urahara came into contact with Kurosaki Ichigo. Urahara guided the fledgling shinigami, and aided him when Ichigo found himself in some rather sticky situations. Upon hearing news of Ichigo's leave of Karakura to Desai University, along with other shinigami also attending the school, Urahara decided to leave his store in the hands of Tessai, his trustworthy co-worker, to go teach at the university. That way he could keep watch over the shinigami, be informed of the current predicaments, assist them in any troubles that they had, and most of all to aid Kurosaki Ichigo on his path to become a great shinigami.
