Iago Grantz is a denizen from the umbral realm of Alara that Hao met when he was thrown across the realms during one of his adventures. Enthralled with stories of life beyond the Wall, Iago sheltered and fed Hao before helping him along his way.

Hao later returned to Alara to check back on his friend, finding Iago living in squalor, having had to sell off most of his possessions in a bid to subside. Working at the Darkmoon Fair Bazaar in near slave conditions had taken its toll on him. Iago's spirits are raised by seeing Hao again, listening and mesmerized by the mage's stories of adventure. When Hao offered to let him come live with him at the apartment complex, Iago agreed and packed up his handbag with his remaining possessions and they were off. Hao managed to trick the young man's handlers, a pair of Trolls, who were sent to make sure he arrived for duty at the Bazaar. Making it back home, Hao set the Alaran up in an apartment and set up the cable for him to let him get his culture fix.
