The Brazilian Imperial Air Force (Portuguese: Força Aérea Imperial Brasileira) is tasked with providing close air support, aerial reconnaissance, and transport support for the other services of the armed forces. It operates 3,848 aircraft (of which 230 are in the Imperial Air Force Reserve) to accomplish these tasks. The air force has approximately 283,000 personnel in active service, with another 84,000 in the reserves. The constitution designates the Emperor as the commander of the air force, but this is a titular/ceremonial role only; de facto command rests with Air Marshal Humberto Rodrigues da Fonseca.
