The Brazilian National Guard (Portuguese: Guarda Nacional Brasileira) is a militia that serves simultaneously as a military police force and a reserve army. It serves as both a defense force against external threats and as a security force against internal threats. In addition to serving as a reserve force for the Brazilian Imperial Army, it also performs counter-terrorism and counterinsurgency operations, and specializes in urban and unconventional warfare. On occasion, it also assists state and local law enforcement with regular policing. Although the National Guard functions as a reserve army, it operates independently of the Brazilian Imperial Army. The National Guard is commanded by Lieutenant General Augusto Reinaldo de Campos. In total, the Brazilian National Guard has approximately 150,000 personnel.
