Dæmon in this page refers to non-His Dark Materials dæmons.
Dæmons are incorporeal and seen as the 'soul' or 'conscience' of their human. Despite the negative connotations of the pronounciation (the word is pronounced 'demon') dæmons are often the voice of reason in an individual's mind. Dæmons take the form of a animal, either real (sometimes with changes such as in color) or fictional (mostly mythic forms such as dragons). Most consider it impossible for dæmons to settle as humans and anime forms. Settling normally occurs later than in His Dark Materials.
