These labels are extremely important to our brand. The reason why we have all these differentiators is so that we really stand out and avoid being a "me too" organization. My role in this company is to provide all our sales team a wide range of certifications that they can proudly present to our clients. Eco-labels are like bubbles in champagne -the more the better.

What are the other marketing and economic benefits to being green?

Our sustainable supply chain is a great marketing tool and positions us as leaders in the green economy. It helps let the world know that we truly care about protecting our planet and supporting American business. And there are economic gains - Five years ago, clients wouldn't consider paying more for FSC paper, but now our clients are willing to spend more for FSC products because they understand the "environmental value proposition."

Are there any challenges to using environmental papers?

Recycled paper is great in terms of its surface and printability. We can print on it very well even at 100% post-consumer recycled content. However, we have some challenges when it comes to converting the recycled printed material into a finished product because of paper strength issues. We've learned special techniques in order to effectively use recycled materials in products like books and pamphlets. We've re-engineered our systems and now we can successfully fold and stitch recycled paper.

We have a partnership with our paper supplier Xpedx. Together we have consolidated deliveries to cut down on transportation emissions, reduced the amount of paper cartons, and prioritized FSC-certified paper. We are trying to improve the amount of American made printing products we use in our facility. We want to achieve 100% of our products from American mills. We also want to find better ways to remanufacture ink. Right now our used printing ink is made into a fuel product, which is better than going to a landfill, but ideally, we'd like to re-use our ink as new printing ink. To continue to be a leader, our challenge is to find new sustainability projects and new ways to grow.
