To edit your save game, insert the appropriate [[tag]] line into the list of playable states near the top of the save file. The dna and title list do ''not'' have to be accurate. For example, to play as the Fatimid Caliphate, the line FATI={gender=male type=kingdom dna="12345678901234" title={FATI C001}} works just fine: it's not necessary to search for the accurate information, only to have the tag correct.

NB: Understand that almost always the heir of a bishopric, republic, or order will ''not'' be from the same dynasty. It's important to save your game as soon as the current ruler dies, edit that file, and then reload as the heir. Otherwise, you will simply see the game over screen on the next day.

Anything counter-intuitive I need to know?

You must save and reload each time your primary title changes. This means when you go from being a count to being a duke to being a king - but it also applies if you are forced by war to change your primary count or ducal title.

ONLY create new vassals during peacetime. New vassals created during wartime will go independent at the end of the war. This is not as important if you have the ducal or royal title above them (they should eventually revassalize peacefully), but areas outside your titles will have to be retaken by force.

Vassals operate according to game mechanics and not psychology: during a civil war, you are often best advised to let your disloyal vassals go free or force-vassalize them without removing their titles until the worst is over. This keeps your badboy score low and keeps your other vassals from joining in the rebellion.

Many events operate across borders. Land borders are usually self-explanatory, but over seas there are only certain specific trade lanes (usually connecting major ports.) For a map, see here.

How can I change my primary title?

You cannot do this in-game.

To edit your save game, open it in a word processor (like notepad) and make the necessary changes.

The fastest way to do this is

  • CTRL+H replace all current instances of the new title tag with XXXX. Then
  • CTRL+H replace all instances of your current title tag with the new one. Then
  • CTRL+H replace all instances of XXXX with your old title tag.

On the other hand, doing the changes this way will cause other lords to have claims on the wrong title.

How can I play as a Muslim/Jew/pagan/pope/bishop/republic/military order?

You cannot do this in-game.

For older versions of CK, there was a mod to the CK .exe file. For current versions, see How to play as ....

How do I move my capital?

See here.

How do I take screenshots?

  • You can press f11, which creates a .gif screenshot in your main CK directory (next to the program). The cursor won't be included.
  • You can use Prnt Scrn, tab out of the game, and paste the image into a graphics editor like Photoshop or Paint.
  • You can use an external program like FRAPS.

Should I buy Deus Vult?

Yes. It's the most superior and least-bugged version of the game- why settle for anything but the best? This is a game meant for noble Kings, not for lowly peasants!

The capital of Rome is no longer in Papal hands and the Papacy has moved to somewhere that I'm having trouble finding. How do I find it again?
