Michelle smiles. She nervously tells you it would involve a marriage of convenience.
It sinks in. She wants you to enter into a fraudulant marriage with Katya so she can stay in the country.
Michelle says it would only need to last for a couple of years. Then you could divorce with no problems. Katya looks at you nervously. She speaks.
"Please, sir, it would mean so much to me. I want the chance to work here, to make money for my family. I will cook and clean. I am a quiet person. I would be no problem for you."
She speaks perfect English. You ask about her background and she tells you that she came to the country to study architecture, but became an art student. Her first year, she played on the women's volleyball team, but a series of surgeries on her ankle ended her playing days. She was a member of several student organizations, including the intercultural exchange group. She speaks five languages: English, Russian, Belorussian, German and French.
She promises again to never bother you. But she must live in your home and you must demonstrate in other ways that you are a "normal" married couple by buying a few things jointly and maybe making a few trips together.
She falls silent and looks at you.
You:
- Tell Katya and Michelle you'll think about it and get back to them
- Tell her you'd need a "test drive" to help you make your decision
