You don't trust yourself to come to a stop before you plunge into the pit so you take a few big steps and then jump without seeing how far across the mouth of the pit is. For several agonizing moments you sail through the air before you come to a landing safely on the other side of the pit. You turn around, peer into the pit and see that it is filled with long metal spikes. A brief scan of the room shows that it is otherwise a dead end. The pit trap itself is narrow enough that you can walk around it back to the door you came in through. You count yourself lucky for avoiding the first of many traps.
