As far as your aware, the threat is downstairs, so no point looking around here. You hold the knife as you walk to the stairs. You peek around the corner down the stairs to see a huge figure walking up the stairs. You take a deep breath, gripping the knife tightly. It's now or never, the figure walks up slowly, step by step, as your mind races on what to do next.
