Open the chest

You decide to risk opening the chest. Cautiously, you raise the lid, but there's no trap. Inside, you find a tiny bottle of pepper spray. It's probably only good for one use, but that might be just enough to save you in a pinch.
Just then, you hear a woman cry out in surprise and fear, and the clanging of a bell. What do you do?
