An Embarrassing Adventure/alley dog-into woods

You are halfway to the woods when you hazard a look behind you and see that the dog has almost caught up with you! Your survival instinct goes into overdrive, and you move your legs as fast as they can go. Snarling, barking, growling, the dog is certain to reach you before you reach the forest, and then what? Is it not going to chase you into the forest after it has come this far?
Approaching the treeline, your foot catches a root and your heart skips a beat as you fall to the ground. Sure enough, the dog is right behind you, and it closes its jaws on... your towel! Before it can bite again, you pull one end of the towel so it stretches out in front of the dog and throw it in its face. As the dog struggles to disentangle itself from the towel, you take off into the woods at full speed.
You run until your legs cannot carry you any further, stopping to rest against a tree. It seems you have completely lost the dog, but you have also completely lost yourself. You doubt your path into the woods was an adequately straight line and you doubt your path out will be either.
In all directions is trees, brush, and silence.
