As I was writing my homework down, the intercom came on. Mrs. Henter? Would you please send Johny Phillips to the office for just a moment? Mrs. Heter instructed me to get up. I didn't bring my things, otherwise I would've been told to.
It was a big school, Washington Middle. So it was about a 5 minute walk from my classroom to the main office. All I could think about was "Dammit! They must've found Alex's crack. Shit, shit, shit shit". I wasn't as worried about what I would say to them as I was about what would happen to Alex. I knew that if he did get caught, I wouldn't see him for a LONG time.
See, Alex and me have been best friends since we were 5. He would always come over to my house on the weekends, so we could play. He was kind of a gangster himself, but he was smart. He knew I wasn't like that, and he respected that. He had my back many times. He was a tough kid. We started going to elementary school together, then middle school. And I assumed, next year, we'd be going to highschool together. We were gonna be lifelong friends, I always thought. I don't have any siblings, but I sure care for Alex enough that he could be one.
When I got to the office, my dad was waiting for me. "Hey Joseph". "Hi dad" I said. I hugged him. I didn't care about what other people thought about me hugging him. As a young kid, I didn't realize what other people thought. As I got older I realized, and I no longer did it in public. But as you get even older you learn not to care. Besides, no one gives me shit about it.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
The lady at the desk said "He's here because he has to show you something."
"What is it?" I ask.
"Come here, and I'll show you." He walked me outside. Apperently this was okay, since he was my father. He took me into the car, where I saw one thing I hoped I would never see.
It was a dead guy.
"Wha.....what is that?"
"That was our neighbor, David".
I remembered now. David. My dad and him always hated eachother. I don't know why. They just never got along well. They'd been in plenty of fights, physical and emotional. But I just never assumed it would come to....this.
"Why did you show me this?"
"Because you have to know. I as a father can not hide anything from you, but now that you know, you have to promise me you won't tell."
"But dad I.."
"DON'T TALK BACK, JUST DO WHAT YOU'RE TOLD!"
I wanted to ask him why he did this. As a father, he always told me something he wanted to hide, but couldn't. Everything. Even the things I didn't want to hear.
"I....I promise." I said.
"Good. I'm gonna go get rid of this body. Just go back to your class."
He got in the car, closed the door, and started it. Before he could go, I knocked on the window and said "Hey dad". He rolled down the window, waiting for me to say something.
"Why'd you do it?" He said.
"Because he hurt your mother." He said. Then he drove off, down the street, leaving me.
To be continued...
