You approach the river with more trepidation than you would any other border to your domain.
The river is a border, not just to your domain, but to this world itself. Beyond is the lad in spirit, of the fae, and of the dead.
Crossing is not always predictable, weather by swim or leap or floating across on a log... and the denizens do not always stay on the other side.
