Krystal is so hungry that her stomach aches more than it ever has in her life, and its all she can do not to cry from the pain of it. In the last 48 hours, all she has eaten is a few slices of bread and a few mouthfuls of soup, and she has walked for hours. She isn’t even sure she can stomach the food, she feels like she wants to be sick, but she forces herself to eat the food a bite at a time. Soon the three apples are gone, eaten right to the core, and in a short while the pain subsides to a dull ache. She realises that if she doesn’t find more food soon she will either have to eat those mushrooms or starve to death.
Wandering over to the river, she sits on the bank and ponders her situation. She finds it hard to focus though, as again the she senses the river almost calling her. She wants to dive in, but she knows that it wouldn’t be a good idea. She can’t however resist the river’s appeal entirely, so she dips her feet in the river. It is then that she notices something in the bottom of the river. It is hard to make out what it is as the river is fairly deep, but it seems to be a long stick. Krystal sees that the end is glowing and realises why she missed it before, she must have mistaken the glow for the reflection of the sun, it was only in the dusk that she could see it for what it really was.
The water is screaming at her now, begging her to jump in. No, it isn’t the water, it was the light. Instantly she realises what the light is and feels ashamed with herself. It was her staff. All day it had been calling out to her because of the psychic bond she had with it, and she had ignored it. I am so stupid, she thinks to herself. It doesn’t take long for Krystal to retrieve the staff, and she soon emerges from the water on to the bank, starving and freezing, but happier than she has been for a long time. Finally she has a chance to survive. She doesn’t even feel tired now, she is so excited that she feels eager to continue exploring right now, despite the fading light.
She spies the nearby hills, and considers the possibility of finding a cave where Fox may have gone for shelter. Or she could try following the river again. Hell, with her staff, she might even stand a chance heading into the SharpClaw village, and there was guaranteed to be food there.
