You stay in the water to hide your shame for a few hoursYou keep on waiting for a miracle to occur, perhaps for the nice clothes fair to appear and give you something to wear.  Unfortunately, reality ensues and the clothes fairy doesn't exist.  If you stay in the water forever, you'll miss school and probably get eaten by sharks or something, so you swim to shore forcing yourself to bare your shame.
