You run and get one of the shirts meant for the passengers who would now never wake up. You slip it on over the clone. It's just barely big enough to cover her butt and the tiniest bit of pubic hair peeks out under the lip of the shirt. You find this strangely arousing and slap yourself for thinking such things about your sister, clone or not.
"Computer! Recognize Authorization D74-8 PN001," you command.
"Recognized," the computer intoned.
"Explain the history of this person in stasis bed 551," you order. Your sister sits up on one arm, and holds her head with the other. She groans.
"ERROR. I am sorry, Authorization D74-8 PN001, is insufficient to access that information," the computer explains. "All information pertaining to stasis bed 551 is restricted to the captain." The computer had information locked? What is going on here.
"Computer," you say, "Verify life signs of ship's captain." You give Doe a hand up. Her clone was slower to rouse.
"Verifying... No life signs not found. Captain is dead. Re-assigning Authority. Verifying life signs of Chief Officer. No life signs not found. Chief Officer is dead. Re-assigning Authority. Verifying life signs of Second Officer. No life signs not found. Second Officer is dead. Re-assigning Authority. Verifying life signs of Third Officer. No life signs not found. Third Officer is dead. Re-assigning Authority. Verifying life signs of Chief Engineer. No life signs not found..." and so it goes until finally the computer recognizes the last eldest living passenger, you. As the computer is checking for any life signs, you explain the situation to your sister, at least as much as you know.
"Captain's Authority re-assigned to passenger D74-8 PN001," the computer finishes.
You and your sister sigh in unison. "Now," you say, "Computer, explain what is going on this person in 551."
Your sister puts the back of her hand on the clone's forehead. "Her skin is moist, John, probably sweat, but she isn't hot to the touch."
"174 years ago, the nations of Earth nearly annihilated each other. At the time this message reached the ship a victor was not known nor was it clear which sides had the advantage. D74-8, which was meant to bring animal stocks with the rest of the colonists, was attacked and destroyed by a Nigerian Imperial Attack Cruiser. Former Captain Griffith Midland, when informed of this, had Dr. Henry Brown, Dr. Valerie Romanov, and Dr. Samantha Lancaster work with the intent of countering the losses of the second vessel. They created 'Project Genesis'. They overrode the ship's security protocols in order to violate international law 197 article 3 paragraph 8, which prohibits the use of genetic manipulation in order to create an enhanced human in any shape, way, or form."
It was at this point that the clone yawned and turned over on her side, curling into a fetal position.
The computer continues its shocking story. "Using Dr. Samantha Lancaster's daughter, D74-8 PN002, as a template, they created a human being which would be superior in many ways. This includes better reaction times, more powerful senses, quicker recovery rate, increased stamina, and programmed with all the knowledge the scientists behind Project Genesis deemed necessary to build and expand the colony. The stasis bed containing Captain Griffith Midland's dog was used during for Project Genesis after undergoing accelerated maturing in a maturation chamber for 9 years. Project Genesis was programmed to be docile and submissive in order to prevent rebellion, which might endanger the colony's survival." The computer stops speaking.
"But why was all the power transferred to bed 551?" Asks your sister.
"ERROR. Ship's logs do not show D74-8 PN002 with sufficient Authority to access that information."
"Damn computer," mutters your sister.
"Computer, why was power diverted to bed 551?" You ask as you roll your eyes.
"136 years ago, D74-8 encountered a cloud of dark matter which damaged fuel supplies. Because the survival of Project Genesis was set as the highest priority objective, power was diverted from stasis beds 383-550 to prevent the loss of Project Genesis. Ninety-three years ago, the gravity of an uncharted quantum singularity diverted S74-8 from its programmed course. Corrections required power to be diverted from stasis beds 156-382. Upon landing on Ceres 3 fifty years ago, it was discovered that there was an unexpected excess of harmful chemicals in the atmosphere, as well as an unhealthy amount of carbon dioxide. Last minute processes to terraform Ceres 3 required more energy than expected. Power had to be diverted from stasis beds 3-155 in order to complete the processes. Completion of atmospheric changes are estimated to be complete in two years, seventy-three days. It is unfortunate that stasis beds 3-550 had to be removed from the power grid to effectively complete the processes.
'Effectively' you think to yourself. The computer's cold 'effectiveness' had killed all your friends and most of your family. And for what!? Some damn illegal super clone.
"Wait computer," your sister says. "How are we supposed to survive over two years if the outside world isn't safe?"
"Nutrient, RFPs, canned foods, and water sufficient to feed 550 humans for six months. Short venture outside the compound may be taken without significant health risks; thus planting may begin with three months when the season allows." The computer explains. "ERROR: ERROR:" The cpmputer thinks you survivors can get along with that? Asshole. "System switching to sleep mode in order to address ERROR." The lights dim, and you could hear the engine calming down in the distance.
"What the hell was that?" your sister asks.
"I have no idea" you answer. This was not going to be fun. Nutrient is a gooey ,pale substance, that really just looks like cum. It feels like snot, but contains almost every known protein, vitamin, fatty acid, and simple sugar that the human body requires to survive, never spoils, and tastes like metallic boiled chalk, fish, and oddly enough, honey. RFPs stand for "Real Food Packets," and they were anything but. They were sealed up and dried out so that they wouldn't go bad for millennia. You look forward to your first harvest and caught wild game, hopefully it'll be edible. The SEED ship that was supposed to land on Ceres 3 before your ship containing colonists had some, well, seeds and animals to spread Earth vegetation and creatures, but if the atmosphere was so bad that your ship would not deem it safe for over fifty years, you have your doubts if any of the animals and plants on the ship took hold.
You sigh and ask your sister, "So where do we go from here?"
You look down on Project Genesis. She has slipped one hand between her legs and, of all things, seems to be playing with herself whilst sucking her thumb.
Your sister groans. "This is just embarrassing."
"I guess it's just natural, like a dog licking itself or something," you offer.
She punches you in the arm. "Quit staring you perv." She looks down and notices your erection. The outfits you had to wear while in stasis kept you alive, but had to be minimal, and that meant they left little to the imagination. So, your pants hide nothing and the outline of a few veins are visible. Well, you could be thankful it was not like the older stasis bed models and outfits, where you had to get naked and they stuck one tube down your throat and another one up your ass. You turn to your sister. You look her directly in the eye; no one could accuse you of looking at anything perverted now.
"Not my fault, Sis. A hot girl diddles herself in front of a man, the body reacts instinctive-like," you say holding up your hands defensively.
She gives you a queer look. "Did you just call me hot?"
You're taken-a-back. You have to think about what you just said. Your mouth is slowly opening to the side as you consider. The clone, upon closer inspection, is very attractive. When you look at her, somehow you don't see your sister, you just see a pretty girl. Then you look at your real sister, and for the first time, you don't see a girl you grew up with, but a young woman three months shy of twenty years.
You scoff, "Yeah, I think I just did. Sorry."
"No, don't worry about it, brother . A girl likes to hear it from time to time." She sounds almost like she's flirting with you. This is all too weird.
Project Genesis begins to groan as she moves her hand from her mouth to her breasts. "Oh, come on!" Your sister shouts. She shakes Project Genesis to wake her up. Project Genesis yawns and stretches as she opens her eyes for the very first time.
"Hello," she greets the two of you using genetically programmed memories of language. "Is one of you the captain? I feel I need to find the captain."
"Well, I guess I am the captain, though I don't think that is very important, Miss..., what do we call you," you say turning back to the clone. She is up on one arm with her legs folded under her, but out to one side.
"Oh, I am Project Genesis, Captain, but you must understand, it is important that you are my captain, Captain," the clone insists. "I must serve you Captain, above all other colonists. Every fiber of my being belongs to you and my reason for existence is to do as you order me."
"Well there is only my sister, you, and me alive on this ship, so the title of captain doesn't mean much, don't you think," you ask her rhetorically, as you rub the back of your head, feeling a bit of surprising embarrassment. Your sister grabs your arm and is squeezing it as tightly as she possibly can. It hurts.
An awkward silence fills the room, you don't need to say any more. You can see it in her pained expression. The full weight of all the lost lives just hit your little sister. Tears roll down her cheeks in steady streams. You hold her with both arms as she begins to beat on your chest in frustration. Now that she has lost it, you can no long push away the reality that she's the only passenger other than you that survived. You really are all alone. For all the two of you knew, you were the last three human being anywhere in the universe. Those damn fools back on Earth may have finally killed each other off. Even in the best case scenarios it would 30, 40, maybe 50 years before another colony ship would arrive, but that would require survivors on Earth who were willing to take the risk of sending ships out for colonization.
Your sister wails into your chest crying, "They're gone, brother . They're all dead. Mom, Dad, Henry, Catherine, our whole family, plus all our friends, and the people we never even got to meet on the ship, and everyone on Earth, they're all dead." You stroke her soft, honey brown hair to soothe her. You yourself begin to shed tears thinking of the billions dead. Her legs falter and the two of you slowly drop down to your knees. You kneel before each other as Project Genesis looks on, not fully understanding, but still with compassion. At least there was that; you feel sure that Project Genesis ability feel for others was a gift from your mother, her last gift to anyone.
