Hot water splashes across your face, bringing you out of a half-asleep reverie.
Leaning over the sink in the girl's restroom, you stare at your reflection. Black hair held into a bun by your butterfly hairclip, bright blue eyes, and the button-up white blouse mom told you to wear stare back at you.
"Sweetie, be ready for your sister's birthday party. I'll come pick you up early."
It takes a second to register that the girl in the mirror is you (you'll never get used to seeing your hair up), but sure enough, it is. Naomi Sade, shy quiet, bookwormish and all-around invisible girl.
Your wet hands begin to feel cold, so you reach for a paper towel.
The truth is, you're here because you couldn't face your English teacher. You didn't do the essay. You, the straight A student, Naomi Sade, blew off your work for the first time in years. So you asked to be excused to the restroom before homework was collected.
I have to go back eventually.
Of course, this was just delaying the inevitable. You'd go back, Miss Anderson would be dissappointed, and who knows what the other kids will do.
Will they clap? Gape at you? Make fun of you for two weeks?
Oh, crud. What am I going to do?
Quietly, to yourself, you say, "I should get back to class soon. Miss Anderson'll send someone if I don't."
The sound of feminine laughter reaches your ears, just barely audible over your breathing.
It's probably nothing. You need to get back to class.
