The fellowship heads east, seeking to cross the Misty Mountans at Mount Caradhras. It soon becomes clear that the mountain is impassable - a blizzard has made the pass too dangerous for all but the most hardy members of the Fellowship. Unfortunately, the other options facing the party are not much better - They could travel north and attempt to pass through goblin town, but it would be almost impossible to slip through unnoticed. Plus, Gollum could have returned to his ancient home - and the wretched creature still posed a threat. The safest but slowest option would be to travel South, towards Isenguard - when he was a prisoner there, Gandalf notices a secret road through Fangorn forest that was only lightly guarded. The worst possible option was going through Moria, or Khazad-dum, as Gimli calls it. Aragorn had been there recently, and told Gandalf that the Dwarven city had been abandoned. Neither hard the heart to inform Gimli of the death of so many of his kin.
