You pick up the book. It's title is "Sermons of the God-King Marikoth". Authored by the renowned elven scholar Elyon Elaren, it contains the laws written down by the empire's first god-king. Apparently, every prisoner is handed a copy. You flip it open to a random page.
"And HIS HOLINESS himself came to me, handed me a quill and a piece of parchment and bid me to write his law - transcribed here as uttered by his very mouth.
Thou shalt not burden your elven overlords, nor show a pretense of discomfort in their presence,
Thou shalt not offer aid or shelter to any of the lower races - orcs, goblins, and their kin,
Thou shalt not murder, rape, or steal, other than in the name of our holy empire,..."
