Maria's curse uses a mixture of the aspects of wicca and witch craft, the witch craft mostly being a form of "lubricant" in order to make up for the lack of the proper preparations for a proper work of faith magic.

The spell was very powerful, and used several methods to augment its power far beyond anything Maria would have naturally been able to cast under normal circumstances. For one, she used herself as the sacrifice, and the fire as the circle to contain the magic while it was forming. She then used her descendants as a focus for the curse.

Since her descendants were used as the focus, the curse was able to gain power the longer it remained dormant, until finally it was released. Due to laying dormant for 200 years, the curse became VERY powerful.

One of the more unusual aspects of the curse is the fact that, in order to allow herself the ability to remain in the world and see how the curse would unfold and protect herself from the reapers, Maria made herself the center of the curse. That is, the curse's power is focused on her and it is the very strongest wherever she is. She also used the curse's power to bind herself to the town along with the curse. This has several effects of note.

• It is impossible to excorsize or destroy Maria's spirit by any means until the curse is dispelled. However, since Maria is also under the effects of a geas, this means that the integrity of the curse is also attached to whether or not she acts according to her geas.
• Maria's spirit cannot be made to leave the area of the curse's effect under any circumstances. It is important to note though that the curse's effects spread rather wide since it has managed to gather quite a bit of power in the 200 years it was laying dormant.
• Upon the activation of the curse, Maria becomes able to utilize the incredible magic of the curse to perform witch craft again at a level that would have been impossible for her in life.
• Most importantly, in order to make the curse bind her to the town in this manner, she had to specify an end-condition for the curse. Curses normally end when the center or the focus are destroyed. However, since neither of these are options, Maria had to create a new end condition for the curse. The end condition for this curse is that an extremely sexually amoral woman who rivals Maria as she was in life must lose her virginity within the curse's area of effect.
• While the definition of virginity has changed over the years, and varies from person to person, the curse functions under a far more specific and limited definition of the word as understood by Maria during her time. By this definition, a girl losing her hymen by any means, including by a penis, does not count as losing her virginity. The hymen is just the proof of virginity, but not virginity itself. A girl is considered no longer a virgin when she receives a man's semen via his penis inside of her vagina. (scooping up cum and shoving it into her vagina also does not count)

At the time Maria cast this curse, she thought it would be impossible for anyone who was as sexually amoral as her to still have her virginity.
