The janitor grabs one of the old tomes and opens it. Flipping through, he then finds a page which he shows you: a woodcut depicting a woman being burned on the stake, with devils and monsters laughing in the flames. ”Maria died in front of hundreds of witnesses. But brujas are beings of dark magic, and her powers were beyond mortal comprehension.” He flips to another page, with hand-made writings that look reminiscent of a journal. ”My ancestor, Emanuel de Santa, was an witch hunter trained by the Vatican's finest exorcists. He refused to believe that the execution was the death of Maria, so he interrogated her neighbors for clues about where and how she performed her magic. In his memoirs, he mentions a cave outside of town, where she supposedly made dark pacts with demons in order to enhance her own powers. I don't know exactly how we should end this curse; but searching that cave for clues should be an excellent start.”
He shuts the tome again and walks back to the cabinet, where he then starts filling a leather satchel with weapons and reagents. ”I'll drive us there right now. Don't worry about school; I'll forge a note from your mama so that the teachers won't worry about your absence.”.
All of this is happening so fast, but for some reason what he says seems to make sense. So you follow the janitor to his pickup truck on the school parking lot, and before you know it you're driving with him out of town, to the empty desert highway.
Hours pass. The janitor navigates through serpentine pathways that eventually end by the foot of a great red mountain. You then have to travel by foot for a while, climbing cliffs and crags until you finally see a tiny black hole among the rocks up ahead: a cave. The Janitor stops and hands you the bags, along with a flashlight.
”Good luck down there, niño. See what you can find out about the curse and how to stop it. I'll be waiting out here for as long as it takes.”
The sudden news hit you like a shock. You're supposed to enter the cave alone?
”Like I said, you're uncorrupted by the curse. You're not driven by lust, so you'll be able to survive whatever she throws at you. I, on the other hand, have only managed to endure thanks to my training as a child. But if I were to enter a place so closely connected to her powers, there's no telling what I might do: especially to a little boy such as yourself.”.
