"So, do you have a boyfriend right now?"

From Create Your Own Story

Larry isn't really your type, and he's not been around enough for you to judge what kind of chemistry you two might have (type isn't everything, after all). You wonder if he's making conversation, or if he is trying to see if he can still get with someone your age.

"Not at the moment, I'm just enjoying life right now." You reply. You watch his reaction, and decide perhaps he is just being friendly and wanting to learn more about the tenants in the building.

"It's a bit hard to believe you're single!" He says, but adds, "but best not to get tied down too early." You agree with him, and ask if he is seeing anyone. He answers that he isn't, but he isn't really looking right now.

"Relationships can sure get complicated." you say, supporting the single-life. "Would you like anything to drink?" You ask, to take things in a different direction.

"Oh yes please," he answers, "I get so thirsty on the job. Mighty kind of you."

You grab a glass of water for each of you, and return to the living room. "So, Larry, do you have any kids?" You never know, you think, perhaps he has a son my age.

"I have two daughters and a son." He smiles, and takes out his wallet to show you photos. His daughters are perhaps a few years older than you, and his son looks about 15. Pity. You tell him how lucky he is, and that he has a beautiful family.

"They're such great kids, I just wish I could see them more." He sighs. "They live 3 hours away, so it's not like we are that far, but it's not like when they were little and their mother and I were together. Man, I loved that baby stage."

"I bet you are a great dad, and your kids appreciate that." You smile at him.

"Well, I'm no Cliff Huxtable, but I sure try." He chuckles, but is pleased at the compliment.

The conversation turns to television then, and you keep chatting for what turns into 15 minutes. Looking at the time, you realize you have to get ready soon if you want to make it to Hailey's, and you motion to the clock.

He gets up, and says, "Hey listen, I'm not sure how this will come off, but... if you ever want to... you know..." He trails off, super nervously fidgeting.

"Oh!" you say, a dozen thoughts filling your head. Was he wanting to say this all along? Was my interest in him what led to this?

"You know where to find me." He says, and starts to bolt to the door.

"Hey Larry!" you call. After getting the guts to ask, it's funny that he doesn't wait for the answer.

"Yeah?" He turns, red faced, but a little hopeful.
