Sit beside the Jane

You walk over the seat next to Jane. She periodically shoots a glance your way before quickly looking back at the ground, all the while picking at a loose thread on her sweatshirt. Looking at her, one might chance a guess as to why the seat was free. The auburn hair that reached here shoulders was a frazzled mess with loose strands poking out here and there as if she had just rolled out of bed. Continuing with that motif, she wore a bulky, turtleneck sweater with a faded, wrinkled skirt complete with sandals worn over socks. She seemed incapable of sitting still as she either shifted in her seat or, every now and again, shuddered as if cold. Sitting next to her also bombarded you with the odor of disinfectant mixed with stale alcohol.
At least there was silence, which is more than you would have hoped for in your other seat choices. Even heading to the back and sitting by yourself would have just attracted attention. Trying to get away from people usually made them want to attack you more. Still, her constant furtive glances were trying your patience.
