No. You'll brave the wolves. If you don't leave now, you don't know if he'll ever let you.

"Doctor Krueger, I'm leaving."

He silently watches you go. After you've taken only a few steps into the forest, you hear maniacal laughter behind you, and the door of the castle closes.

You try to remember where your car is. If you can find your car, you can find the road, and you can then find a town. You're pretty sure you have your bearings straight, so you set off through the dark woods. The nearly full moon lends a little bit of light to your journey. You hear a howl to your left, then an answering one to your right. They're far closer than you're comfortable with. You continue on.

Pretty soon, you hear yet another howl. This one is closer still. You think you see something at the farthest reach of your vision off to your left. You stop. It stops, too. You start. It keeps pace with you. It's a wolf, flanking you. Probably. Whatever it is, this isn't good. Suddenly, you can't see it anymore.

You can see your car up ahead. Thank goodness! You make a mad dash for it. Just as you yank the door open, you hear a snarl behind you. You leap in and slam the door. A huge animal thumps against it. It's a wolf. You can see that. The beast jumps up on the hood. You remember that the windshield's broken. You grope around the backseat and feel a long piece of metal. You grab it. Crowbar. It'll make a nice weapon. When the wolf thrusts its muzzle inside the car, you hit it as hard as you can with the crowbar. The animal yelps and draws back. It trots away and regards you from a distance.

"Get out of here! Git!" You yell.

The animal turns and disappears into the forest.

You stay up the rest of the night, but nothing else menaces you. Upon dawn, you hit the road. You've probably walked a mile or two before the first car approaches. You make like a hitchhiker, but it doesn't slow.

Eventually, you reach the next town. You tell the villagers about a mad scientist who lives in a castle just up the road, but no one believes you. You call your firm, and tell them about the accident. They make sure you get checked in to the nearest hospital. The doctors and nurses don't believe your story about a mad doctor with a doomsday device, either. They think it's all the result of that blow to your head and the exposure of being lost in the wilderness for three days. When they start suggesting you see a psychologist, you stop insisting it's true, but you'll always know in your heart what happened.

The End
