Any short words are not capitalized in a story or chapter's title, unless they are at the beginning.

the day The duck crossed The road

That's completely wrong. Capitalizing the first letter of the first word improves it a bit.

The day The duck crossed The road

That's better, but still not good enough. By making the words "The" before "duck" and after "crossed" will make it seem even better.

The day the duck crossed the road

Almost there, but so far. Make the first letter of the last word a capital is improvement. Also capitalize "crossed," as it's not a "short" word. And even though "day" is a short word, it's still important to the idea, so you capitalize that, too.

The Day the Duck Crossed the Road

That is perfect!
