Anyone there?
I've been using this website for six months now and it seems more empty than ever. Just wondering if there's anyone else here, adding new stuff visiting or whatever. --Adam02oc 08:53, 14 July 2017
Removed pedo stories
I created a filter for the story pedo__romp (with only 1 underscore, but used 2 underscores to get through my own filter). After a little research this content would be considered illegal as obscene even though it was only in text form. Reference I don't monitor the content on the site, but this was pointed out to me by a user. If you find any content explicitly related to sex with a minor, please remove it or edit it. --RobKohr 20:00, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
Removing these pages is impossible. If the wrong word is in the page title, the page can't be moved or deleted, only edited. --Platypus 21:42, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
To quote another user, who was unable to reply here for technical reasons:
"You are totally wrong about written descriptions of underage sex being illegal. The fact that the material could be considered obscene, and thus illegal (in the US) would actually apply equally to any story with any extreme sexual activity. It can be applied to rape, bestiality, and just about ANY story that contains sexual descriptions. It is based on a remnant of a struck down child protection law that was unconstitutional, which is why it is sited for material directly related to children. The law is laughable, and you may have found one of the few cases where it was actually used, and the only one that I am aware of that actually made it through successfully. The user who pointed it out to you must be a free speech hating Nazi to bring up such an unlikely and remote senario as based on such a law. If this law were actually a problem, the largest sex story site on the internet www.asstr.org would not exist. No reasonable court would rule that you are guilty of transporting obscenity for something someone else wrote on your website. I'm not trying to tell you how to run your site, but if the "no pedo stories" rule stands; I will be leaving."
This is very much a sentiment I share. --BakaG 08:08, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
You realize that anyone who had said pages on their watch list is now totally hosed, right?
You mean because that renders their watch lists totally inaccessible? Yes, and it also blocks access to various index pages. I'd like to remove the pages rather than have the site littered with blockages, but that's not currently possible. I've left feedback at the main site, but we'll see if and when anything is done about it. --Platypus 22:42, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
I implore you to look at Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act - I'd link to it, but keeps preventing me from posting external links.
No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.
Section 230 applies to intermediaries of third-party content. When content is simply hosted and not moderated by a web site then there is no liability for the provider. ---Privitude 22:45, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Here we go: https://www.eff.org/issues/cda230
Section 230 says that "No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider" (47 U.S.C. § 230). In other words, online intermediaries that host or republish speech are protected against a range of laws that might otherwise be used to hold them legally responsible for what others say and do. The protected intermediaries include not only regular Internet Service Providers (ISPs), but also a range of "interactive computer service providers," including basically any online service that publishes third-party content. Though there are important exceptions for certain criminal and intellectual property-based claims, CDA 230 creates a broad protection that has allowed innovation and free speech online to flourish. --Privitude 23:03, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm confused here, so any content that includes pedophilia, is it allowed here or not? Cobraworry
To put it as simply as possible: No. Underage sex is strictly forbidden on this site. --Platypus 18:54, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
You can let me know on my talk page. For the most part, I can edit or delete whatever needs editing or deleting. --Platypus 22:10, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
The whole thing gets worse when you look at the Federal Law on Obscenity. Check out the Citizen's Guide on the Law: [1] After looking over it, the one thing that stands out is that the material has to have literary or artistic value. I think a lot of prosecution power has to do with popular opinion at the time. --Hornyboy 09:43, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
An Idea For A Perfect Game Of Thrones Story
Hello dear users of C.Y.O.A, I know how our precious site works and I would like to announce you that I am about to write a big and great story, in the Universe of A Song Of Ice And Fire book series. HELP
Could some people please help me write *time machine
Rules?
Hi, I'm fairly new here. I'm wondering, is there anything that is not allowed in stories/on site? I just don't want my stuff deleted. -Creat0r
Just some trouble
Hi there, I've been writing a C.Y.O.A. and I'm having the problem that I've set three options on my first page; Male, Female and Other. These redirect to different C.Y.O.A.s and it is rather irritating that when I try to chose the male option to advance it comes up with a selection of emo guys that I can use, from a different Catagory. Any help would be appreciated as I will not be able to advance in my writings until it is fixed.
Thank you in advance
--Xuan Tian Shang Ti
Xuan, I had that same problem on my new CYAO. This happens because someone else is already using this as a category name, so it will keep redirecting to their story. It helps to use your story's name in front of the choices or to put a specific phrasingthat noone has used yet. For instance say your story is Smurfs in Ireland and you want to give people the choice of being a male or female. You could put Smurfs In Ireland: Male, or I want to be a male smurf Hope this helps for anyone else with the same problem.
-- Above guy didn't sign.
Additionally, try using the character |.
You see, Choice1 will show up just as Choice1

Main Page Stories
What constitutes a story being on the main page? It seems like people just throw theirs on there. Theotherguy 07:10, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
We're trying to only include a small, representative sampling on the Main Page. Yes, some people are throwing theirs on there, but those stories are being thrown back off when they're spotted. --Platypus 11:25, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
By my understanding, the story has to be of a quality that it can be 'considered' for a feature, not necessarily featured, but close or at the level. By the way, great to see someone took the initiative and did this, the site really needed some tidying. --Heyoeveryone 13 September 2012
Maybe we should make specific guidelines? Must be this many pages, this quality of writing, etc. etc. Theotherguy 23:14, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
Well I would suggest at least having the minimum amount of pages be set to 50, besides the 'Quizzes and Challenges' Section. I'm not sure about the quality of writing, as long as it is understandable and entertaining. --Heyoeveryone September 14 2012
Main Page and Its Length
I'm sure most of you here have noticed this already, but I'd like to just point out. The Main Page is ever growing in it's length. That's great news! That means more adventures, but it comes at a price. The overall size of the page. I thought I'd do a little experiment and see how long it would take me to scroll down from the top to the very bottom. It took me more than 10 seconds. That is a ridiculously long time. Only fine for social media sites such as Facebook.
What I'm suggesting is that we need to find a way to successfully organize the Main Page to which the size of it is significantly less, while not having it link off into other pages. Such as replacing the sections with say Collapsible Tables [2], so then you can choose which sections you want to look at, perhaps even placing sub tables on top of that.
Heyoeveryone 12:02, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
It's certainly worth looking into. But bear in mind that newbies constantly screw up even the limited formatting currently on the Main Page. Any further complications to the coding will mean even more intense monitoring and reverting. --Platypus 15:56, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Ahh, true. I barely know coding myself, but new people constantly make stories, and sooner or later, mistakes will be made, and those beloved tables will be disfigured. It is possible though, and if someone were able just to implement this idea, it will do wonders for this site. I don't go on often, but when I do, I always notice how long the Main Page is.
So, IF anyone is willing to do this, then by all means, go ahead, it will do wonders for the site, I suggest you ask Platypus though.

YouTube Idea
I have been a fan of this site for a while. I am an experienced actor and had the idea of adapting some of these stories to YouTube. Essentially, it would be an audiobook of the story where you click a link at the end of the video to make your choice (leading you to the next part of the story). I would like to try it with a shorter story first. If you have a short, well written CYOA story and are interested in sharing your story on YouTube, please let me know your username, the name of the story, and that I have your permission to record it and put it on YouTube (right below this post) . I would also be happy to hear any input on this idea.
-AlexCW
I know a lot about doing that kind of thing, it would be really great if it was animated or something like that. If you need any help working with Youtube CYOAs I can certainly help. I can also do (some) animation if you want. -Creat0r
I think this would be awesome! Guys I don't know how long this thread was posted but I would like to continue it. You know in the you adventure stories or something like that you flip to a page to continue? Well, maybe it should be one or two long videos that you pause at choices and the choices have the time you skip to. I might make a video like this on my YouTube! Awesome idea.

Family-Friendly Section, Not Family-Friendly
I recently noticed that about 10 new stories were made, and each of them looked like they should be in the 10+ section. How is stealing a car family friendly? Or discouraging school? Seriously, If I see one more story like that being made, it's going straight to PG-13. Note: I am 11 years old, and I don't even think that those stories are appropriate for my age!--The Adenster 01:05, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Adenster, family-friendly is generally a relative term. While I dont know the particular stories you speak of, discouraging school or stealing a car CAN be used in a family setting IE. one character has a Huckleberry Finn-ish tendency to skip school and the car can be used as a life lesson piece. Terms like Family-Friendly vary greatly from person to person and are entirely dependent on perception. For example some people believe in spanking their children whilst others dont. One side would consider it "Family-Friendly" whilst the other group would not. Generally if things such as car-stealing or such occur it can be acceptable if put in perspective and used in the context of the story. --BFEL 12:13, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
New Category
I just had a really great idea, maybe a new category can be made for just new stories, called Not Rated Yet, or whatever. Then, where the story is placed can be decided by somebody, so that sections like "Family-Friendly" are not so populated with stories that aren't appropriate.--The Adenster 01:23, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Your points are well taken, and this new group of writers is not writing family friendly material, but I'm somewhat averse to creating a Not Yet Rated section for somebody to rate, because there's only one sysop active on this site. My time is limited and I like to get in a little bit of time to work on my own writing. --Platypus 03:02, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
I myself would be interested in assisting with this, Platypus. --TheElderOnes 03:28, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, maybe ratings could be incoporated into reviews. That way unrated stories can move and get a review simultaneously.--Snowball- The Anti-Adult-Content Resistance Leader 10:52, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
About story page links
I'm kind of a perfectionist and it just hurts my eyes to see the story page links not formatted properly. It's either because people are too lazy or just not well enough informed on how to create proper links. Most pages have something like this:
- Story Name-Page Name = Story Name-Page Name
- Story Name/Page Name = Story Name/Page Name
- Story Name: Page Name = Story Name: Page Name
And so on. What I'd like to see is this:
- Display Name = Display Name
- Display Name = Display Name
The Display Name field makes the link show as that to the user, while still linking to the Story Name/Page Name page. This kind of naming makes the story pages look a lot better while still keeping the pages properly sorted out. I think this is explained on the main page, but it seems a bit unclear. Maybe it could be improved? --Dreama 16:00, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
It is discussed in the Tutorial, but sometimes it seems as if some of the people who want to write here aren't capable of reading.
Mostly, I like to see consistency within any given story. --Platypus 21:16, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Is there a way to get the Category page to display just the page names? In my story, I use the Page Name idiom, but the category page shows every page with the story prefix and they are all grouped under the same header. --Shiine 8:50, 5 July 2010
I don't know a way of changing the way the page names are displayed on the Category page, but if you categorize each individual page as , then the Category page will aphabetize based on whatever you tell it the Page Name is, regardless of what the page name displays as. --Platypus 19:10, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
I added a section to the tutorial about using the sort key in the category field. --Shiine 23:40, 10 Aug 2010
problems with the search bar
Hello, I just want to say that there seems to be a problem with the search, whenever I type a requist in it comes back with no results, I tried using the report a bug feature but the appears to be broken. --Tricrotic 11:57, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the search bar only works when you type in the exact title of a story. Granted, there is a place where you search for pages that begin with _______, that should be the automatic search engine. I don't know much about programming, but it really shouldn't be too hard to move a program that's already been created, just to a different, more accessible place. - veri_disquo (2014)

Questions
Are the stories in here copyrighted in anyway? If I want to feature one on a website, can do I need permission of the author or is it public material?
The stories here aren't copyrighted. But it might be polite to mention your intentions to the author beforehand. --Platypus 22:53, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
I am pretty certain you are in error here. The Berne Convention, agreed to by the majority of the world, makes anything written also automatically copyrighted from the moment that it has been "fixed", and publishing online absolutely qualifies as fixed. That is why Wikipedia maintains a clearly stated policy regarding the reuse of its content under a Creative Commons license. They couldn't do that, nor would they need to, if collaborative, wiki-style writing did not result in the same copyright that other forms of writing does. It just means that as a collaborative work, copyright is vested in some degree in all the authors who participated in its creation. (To determine exactly what degree, you'd have to consult someone with more than my layman's understanding of copyright laws, especially given the inherently international nature of both intellectual property issues and internet publishing.)
Ergo, in response to the original question, yes, permission is absolutely needed to use the stories on other websites, as I have not seen anything on this site like Wikipedia's Creative Commons policy that all editors agree to be bound by as part of the editing policy, which would similarly allow free use of the stories (under the terms of said license, that is). Nor is there any sort of posted policy indicating that the collective authors of the site, by participating in the site, are surrendering any copyright they might otherwise hold in the works created, neither to the site nor to the public domain. And at this point, implementing any version of such policies would not retroactively remove copyright from all those stories already created. I suspect that primary rights would rest with the original creator of each individual story, as all additional chapters would potentially qualify as derivative works, but I don't know the full intricacies of how copyright law applies to collaborative works, online or off, and suspect that the situation is more complicated than that, especially since the exact details would vary from country to country and individual contributors to a story could very well be in many different nations.
Unfortunately, it is likely to be rather difficult to acquire permission for some of the stories, due to potentially having multiple authors, some of whom may have been known only be a pseudonym, and maybe a no longer used email address in the website's files, if those authors are no longer active on the website. But even works with unknown authors remain in copyright for 50 years after publication, in case the author is discovered or makes themself known during that time, in which case the normal life of author plus 50 years applies. (And these are just the minimums provided in the Berne Convention, some countries have enacted longer terms.) -- Cadrac 20:59, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
@Cadrac, Actually, it depends on what the Wiki is attributed under. If it is CC0, then everything placed here is automatically fair game for anyone to do anything they want, even copy and sell. The greater concern is where your content comes from, not the content posted here. Basically, I think Platypus pretty much just said editthis content is CC0, which means anyone can do anything with the stuff on here with no concern over legal recourse. Now, if I copy text from a novel and post it on here, that is a completely different issue... --Dirty Me 05:17, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
He may have said it, but that in no way is legally binding on any of the authors since, as far as I have been able to determine in searching the site, there is no notice which authors must agree to that their work will be under such a license if posted to the site. While every editing page warns that the work "may be edited, altered, or removed" and not to submit it if you are not okay with that, it doesn't say anything about it being copied to another site. That was my whole point. Authors did not have to agree to give up copyright in order to post, or agree that such rights are surrendered for all posting on the site by agreeing to a general TOS, ergo, they haven't. While the wiki program has a license the wiki content isn't attributed under ANY license. Platypus may have said the content was CC0, but since the authors never had to agree to that and he doesn't own the copyrights, he doesn't have the authority to make them CC0. --Cadrac 13:12, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
If the story is in the Pit, can you edit the story to be in a different category? Because, for this story that I have been editing, I wish to change the maturity since its hard to keep track of every link you put. The Lost City of Atlantice is the story i had been working on for a bit and some of the tags that were created aren't really in the category. Plus, some of my ideas fit into other categories. What should I do? --User:sayrppoetry/sayrppoetry
If you retrieve a story from the Pit, feel free to up its maturity level as needed. --Platypus 22:51, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Status functionality?
The tutorial mentions status functionality as if you are able to use variables, but there was no information on how to perform operations on variables (You know, add, subtract, that sort of thing.) I looked for an article on the issue but didn't find any. Is this functionality available?
No. You can not perform operations on the variables. You have to do any adding and subtracting manually on the next page, and if you want options where you have different values for the variables, you have to create multiple paths. --Rawar 19:27, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
BTW: I was wanting to experiment with status stuff, so I ended up creating a template page for the sandbox. Since you can't delete pages, and this might be useful, I replaced it with a basic status bar and left it in the sandbox. I hope others find it useful. --Shiine 04:27, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
New here, and want to know a few things about editting.
I joined today and want to know if it is okay for me to go through stories fixing some grammar mistakes and spelling. (not that I a grammar freak or saying I am perfect myself.) Some stories i looked at had a dozen mistakes a page and that is just bad for the site. See DUDE WHERES MY CAR, I fixed the main page, leaving in the repitive sentence structure because I was unsure if I should change that. The next pages I looked at were equally plagued. Is there a way to catergorize stories as "being a pain to read because of mistakes"? I did not mean chnaging content, simplly fixing sloppy mistakes. To be sure, I am not planning on reading every story on here to be an English jainitor. I just wondered whose job these things were, Thanks. ~RandyRift
I’m not an admin or anything but…
There is no real problem or rule against editing pages, especially grammar correction. If you want to fix stories then that’s alright. Hell, even adding new stuff to the story is fine in most cases. The problem with this site is that there are some users who create crappy stories with five pages that have no real plot or proper grammar. People work on their story for a day then leave resulting in many poor stories with no real purpose. So if you want to fix stories then go for it.
Unfortunately, there are far too many ungrammatical writers out there for me to repair all the things they post. I am the only active sysop here, and I don't object to anyone trying fix grammar around the site. We were recently invaded by a Canadian school whose students wanted the thrill of posting on the web despite the fact that many of them had a poor grasp of English. Their teacher's help made many things worse, not better. But since they seem to have left, many of their stories are going to be getting moved to the Pit of Abandonned Stories soon. --Platypus 01:21, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
I have another question, why is it that on the category page, (for my story) when I am logged in I see 90 pages, but when not logged in I see 78? (the page lists only that many.) ~RR 3 April 2010
Pictures and Copyrights
I'm not very familiar with finding out what kind of copyrights some picture has on the web and what pictures are free to be posted here, for example, and what pictures may be freely copied and even uploaded here to be displayed. So far I've only been directly linking to pictures on Wikipedia (in very rare occasions anyway), but that's very limited. Anyone know better? --Dreama 22:56, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
The safest thing is to upload your own pictures to photobucket or something. However, there are several free stock photo and picture sites out there. My favorite is http://www.sxc.hu/ . However, make sure you read the licenses for the photos before using them or linking to them! --Rawar 00:42, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

If you like the story idea, please help create a scenario for Myra. Remember, do not edit or add onto anyone else's scenario. Create a small one of your own. It doesn't have to be deep! Thank you for contributing!
She ought to wear a funky fruit hat. She's 12, was living with her mother in Maine, dad's a deadbeat, moves to Oklahoma for no apparent reason, uncovers alien conspiracy there. Turns out her mother's been replaced by an evil space automaton. She must team up with her drunken embarassment of a father to rescue her from a Dick Dastardly-esque villain who brought the aliens here with a magical voodoo portal, and then find a way to close said portal. Along the way, she learns important lessons regarding metaphysical idealism and beef Wellington. --Nalanhata, June 18
Moving a page
Is there a way to move pages? I've looking over a story with terrible spelling problems and this page links to A little Tatoo paurlor which should be fixed. -- TheRick 05:26, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
The page-moving function had to be disabled due to malicious vandals. However, what you can do is copy the text in the mis-named page, blank that page, edit the page with the mis-named link, and paste the text onto a new page with the correctly spelled name. Then I'll delete the blanked page. I'm the only one who can do deletions. And I do appreciate anyone who actually wants to do some work tidying up the place. --Platypus 11:56, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Severe lag of site?
Anybody else getting loadtimes of upwards of 5 minutes (multiple refreshes included) for even the shortest of pages?
If so, I think I know why. Remember, this is only a guess (although it's one with backup). I noticed my browser (Chrome) seems to hang on loading the info from TagNimbus, so I tried to visit the TagNimbus site. It seems to be down or dead, and a look at www.IsUp.me told me the whole site seemed to be down for others, too.
If it's down, any chance of getting in touch with the owner to restore it? Otherwise, if TagNimbus is finall- I mean unfortunately dead, can we just remove the thing anyways? It didn't seem to change anything and was abused to tag pages with irrelevant tags...
But hey, this is all the rambling of one author who just hopes to get the site working so he can get back to writing the gore story he was in the middle of... --TheElderOnes 06:27, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
Hello
Hello. Just wanted to say this site looks really cool and interesting, I really look forward to helping stories along or even starting some once I get the hang of it.
I should know though, are there any particular rules or anything that aren't immediately obvious or that are mentioned? And where should I start? Any advice for a newbie would be very appreciated. The site is a little unnecessarily complicated.
Heyo whoever you are! Best thing you should start on is probably continuing on stories that have been started, but after 10 pages, the author has quit. If you really want to begin a new story, i suggest planning it before you actually type it all out. In your plan you should have: the main storyline, the seperate endings, and of course the characters who are going to be in the story. -- User:Heyoeveryone 3 September 2011
You should try mind mapping. It's a great way to make branching plot lines. -- ImmortalDreams
It's bad to add to the number of all the carcasses you can see on the Main Page. Save those, or if you prefer, get the more severely rotting ones that we lumped in the Pit to decompose. Unfortunately, stories are hard to get rid of, so save them from non-authorship before it's too late. It also makes it easier, since you'd agree with the storyline from the beginning, whereas others end up left behind because there's a lock on the whole thing. For Example, everything might lead to a standstill after everything directs to a page. The rest of the plot is a mystery and starts rotting. Simply because the author him/her self doesn't know how it ends.--Snowball- The Anti-Adult-Content Resistance Leader 14:58, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Template Appearance Problem
The templates for my story War Pigs are coming out all wrong in IE 9, but they look fine in Firefox. Can anybody explain why? It would be greatly appreciated. --AgentVincent 03:55, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
The problem is probably that it's IE9. IE9 enjoys shitting all over everything nice looking on the internet. --TheElderOnes 15:47, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
The whole "Anon" thing.
Anyone else amused by this? Three brief little "attacks" (if you even want to call them that) with an empty threat? I dunno, I guess it just struck me as pathetic and funny. --TheElderOnes 06:26, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Yea a real dumbass, but thank God he didn´t write any pages, those would have been real attacks on the site! :)
Pictures
I noticed that there was an embedded image button. Being a photo editor, such as myself, I jumped at the idea of adding a picture where they could be used. Unfortunately it says that file adding is disabled. I looked through the General Discussion and i realize that you have had "attacks" in the past but is there a chance that they could be re-added?
--Aegisofawakening 01:58, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Actually, file adding was disabled due to server-size limitations, not due to attacks. But images can still be displayed on pages, even if the file itself cannot become part of this site. --Platypus 04:09, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks!
I'd just like to say thank you so much!!! Why? Well, a few years back i wrote a few tales (Girlngirl High, All Alone and Teehee!). I thought, no way were these stories would ever become hits, all of them are less than 100 pages! And i never finished any of them. So i decided to quit the site for 2 years. Today, i decided to go on and look at my stories, see how they've turned out.
I looked down to find out that every story i've made has gotten over 1000 views on the first page, with the most being 20 000!!! I was just amazed at how my stories were this popular. So i'd just like to say THANK YOU!! I've given the job of continuing the stories to my friend Heyoeveryone. He's a very good friend of mine and he said he'd love to take over. So once again, thank you so much for your support throughout these past 2 years. Also thanks to those people who added pages onto my stories. If you'd like to work on these stories, just ask Heyo for permission and he should promptly allow you.
Am i coming back? Nah. Well maybe. --User:Unkowhero23
Actually, you don't need my permission. Just make sure that you don't have many grammatical and spelling errors, and that the pages aren't just one or two sentences. Those are terrible, and with the load times of the site sometimes, you want something more than just that.

Spam
What's with all the random advertisements lately? It's actually more of a nuisance than those Anon people a little while back. Is this site really such a big deal that people need to go around and post all these ads? - Jamesparker, September 23, 2011
Ad's? Where? Link them here. It's best if you name and shame them, and so that their account will be quickly deleted off the site. And I guess it is such a big deal. --Heyoeveryone 9 October 2011
Mature, Adult, Bad Taste
A suggestion, if you will. Maybe the mature, adult and bad taste story listings should be collectively put on a sub-page separate from the main page? On reflection, maybe only the Adult and Bad Taste ones. Those wishing to see those stories wouldn't have any trouble finding them by following the link (from the main page), and it'd render the main page free of offensive language and titles. Everybody wins? What'd'y'all think? JackalRobot 21:12, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
I have been giving the idea consideration, especially as some people would prefer not to be exposed to even the titles of some of the Adult stories. And it would help reduce the sheer size of the Main Page. --Platypus 00:41, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Despite my own story preferences, I agree. I always thought it odd (and not a little family-unfriendly) to give almost equal weight to kiddie stories as well as possibly very kinky adult stuff. As long as you can always go directly to any given page (through a browser bookmark perhaps) I actually suggest adult stories are kept behind a disclaimer screen of some sort. Anedwcan 19:48, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Also, it can broaden the areas for the Adult Stories and free the titles. Then there could be another sub-group for the mild content.--Snowball- The Anti-Adult-Content Resistance Leader 14:52, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
That is a great idea you have there, and it would be nice to see this happen. However there is a huge flaw I see in this. Recent Changes would still show everything be it a kids story about a kitten, or an adult story about bestiality.--Yihman1 07:04, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
I have a "Mature" (R rated) story I am writing. I am considering adding a storyline in which the character gets raped offscreen. Is that too intense for "Mature"? Should I post the beginning of the storyline, and the page that links to it, here to be vetted? --LaedyRose
I don't think an offscreen rape would necessarily need to be put in the Adult section. At least the Mature section, certainly. It depends on how much detail you put in. You might want to put a warning at the beginning of the storyline, simply because rape is a special kind of evil and will break (or make) the story for some readers. --Platypus 01:34, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
Feedback For My Stories
Hi! I'm new here, and I'm starting my first story, Transformers: War Between Two Worlds. I wasn't sure if it should go in the Family Friendly Section or the PG13 Section, so I put it in Family Friendly. If you have any feedback, read what I have so far and post it here. This story will take me a while, but as soon as I'm done, I'll get started on another one. Also, would anyone like to team up with me on a story? I'm guessing most of you will think I'm crazy, but it's good to check. TEAMWORK RULES! I'm not that smart when it comes to wiki editing, so if there's a place where this page would better fit, then please tell me here.

Finding A Story
Hi everyone.
Just a quickie.
1) Is there a story that focuses on something like a haunted house/mansion/what-have-you somewhere? I've skimmed the titles but nothing popped out at me and I've been reading here and there but even though most stories seem to only be like 5-10 pages the sheer number of them means I haven't had a chance to check them all and was hoping someone who'd been around longer knew of one and could point me in the right direction?
-- Cpt. Devonin
- I don't know of such a story, but this brings up an issue I've been meaning to: it's awfully hard for someone to find anything they might be looking for, if they haven't seen it already. I'm wondering if the allowance of short synopses has been discussed before, or perhaps if we might create categories like stories that feature supernatural characters or stories that take place in haunted houses.
- --KC Riley 03:39, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, Madman's Mansion isn't haunted but its the best one I know of that involves a proper what-have-you-somewhere and decent story length and grammar and punctustion and so on.
--Snowball- The Anti-Adult-Content Resistance Leader 14:49, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Also, how about this: when you enter the main page, there is a link to each level of the stories, then, you can continue on into sub-groups of Ghost, Sci-Fi, Quest, Tragedy, or something like that.--Snowball- The Anti-Adult-Content Resistance Leader 13:55, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
How to know people are watching?
I'm new here, and recently finished a short story.
But how do I tell if anyone is seeing it? Is there a place on this website to get feedback on the stories?
Thanks
You can see at the bottom of each page how many times the page has been accessed. --Platypus 07:16, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Platypus, is this still true? I have looked at my page, and do not see a number for how many times it has been accessed. Or was this removed? --Dirty Me 12:20, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, unfortunately, this isn't currently active. It was always nice to know how often a page has been accessed. --Platypus 15:38, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Something wrong?
Hi, I'm new here. Saw this site and thought it was pretty interesting, and gave it a try. It's fun and I'm currently working on a story. However, I'm getting a feeling I am doing something wrong with creating stories and editing them. If I am doing anything wrong so far, which I am sure I am, please tell me, okays?
-Bluedragon
So far, so good. I see nothing wrong with what you're doing. --Platypus 14:25, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
A page making/organizing resource
First of all, I don't want to sound like a spammer or advertiser, but since I can code, I thought I'd make a resource for everyone who's interested.
I've noticed when making games on here, that it's difficult to keep track of all your pages, and it's still hard to make them even with a mind map. So I made a rather unconventional, very small piece of software using Game Maker. Despite its not too standard interface. It provides an easy and efficient way to organize your pages. You can type and paste your page content into it and then automatically generate the pages in the correct format for this site.
I in no way claim that I have ownership rights to the site. I only want to provide a resource for its users in order to make the creating process easier.
The file is only 2.3MB.
Here's the download link(vs1) - http://www.4shared.com/file/g5M6PSP2/CYOA_-_Page_Organizer.html

New Features:
Made page recognition easier by showing the link names instead of the page names for the disabled parallel fields of each choice.
Added a Clear button to the description area.
Added a feature where the active field is always highlighted.
Added tab key support for faster navigation between fields.
Bug Fixes:
All of the proper link names show up in the generated code files. Before, all link names had been choice1's.
The disabled child name(now link) fields no longer show a value of 0 when going to one page and back again.
New download link(vs1.1) - [3]

Interaction
How can I communicate with other users of this site, so that we can conspire and work together. I am currently working on a story that is just to much for one person to handle, but I don't understand how I can talk with "helpers". I just don't get it!-- Cyclops
You can click on a user's name to view their profile page, then click on the "discussion" tab to see their talk page. If you post something on their talk page, they'll see an alert at the top of their screen. Hopefully, they'll click the alert, go to their talk page, and then write something back on your page. --Platypus 23:06, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
i think that there needs to be a few changes to this site. A chatroom. It would be very easy to find one online and embed it in a page. Also I believe there should be category pages where all the sci fi pages are in one place with links to it. Maybe on the mainpage, instead of links to very story, have links to the category listing. Finally I believe there should be something to let us rate pages (as in 4 out of 5 stars). -Gartonia
The interaction between users does seem unusual (profile page->discussion...) There can be a better way surely? Also, clicking on a user's name is not easy. For one, the pages don't have a author's link. Also, the person who wrote the last page in a story might be different from the author of the current page. A link to the profile of the creator should be there on each page so one can easily click on it... -BenchWarmer
A link to the profile of the creator is there on each page. Just click the History tab. There's a link to the profile page and to the discussion page of every user who's edited the page. --Platypus 19:43, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I am one of the new guys here. I just wanted to know if there are any rules that I must adhere to on this site. I mainly made an account just so that I was able to continue on a story that I saw on this website. Well anyway, If you can notify me, please do, Thank You.

Linking to existing pages
How does one link back to an existing page, in effect creating a loop?
The same way you create a link to a new page: By enclosing the name of the page in square brackets. For example: Main Page links you to Main Page.--Platypus 21:49, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Featured Story - A Dead Thing?
We're 8 days from the 8 month anniversary of the last time the Featured Story section was last updated. Who was last in charge of updating that? --TheElderOnes 07:24, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
The idea was proposed by Occono, last seen in 2009. I said then that I had no objections to such a feature, but no intention of participating in it. Anyone volunteering? --Platypus 18:19, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
As I understood it, anyone could edit the featured story section, no one in particular was responsible for keeping it reguarly updated. That being said, 8 months is an alarmingly long time. If we´re looking for a story right now to put on there "Megan" (which is already nominated) could do. Although that one might be a bit to... bloody disturbing, to be put there. Another one might be Battle Royal, which has a lot of pages. (Wait, did I just recomend Battle Royal over something else beacuse it was so bloody disturbing? Scary thought!).
Overall though, personally I´d want to put a quality story on the featured page. And the simply fact is that there arn´t enough quality storys on this site to maintain a one or two months switch around in my opinion. Also, personally, I´d also not like to see adulth storys be put there, which decresses the story-pool significantly.
Woah, seriously? 8 months? That is amazing. Nevertheless it's a great thing that someone actually bothered to change it. It may be my story, but from 2012 onwards, I was surprised that Remember was still featured. Congratulations to TheElderOnes. It's been a long time coming, and now you've finally gotten the story featured. Nice.

Compressing the main page
I started compressing the main page into smaller sortable tables. I just finished the family friendly section, feel free to take over for me if you would like to do the next sections
The goal for all of these tables is to keep the list around 10 items, and then have a more stories page for each section. The simpest way to do this is to choose all stories that have 50+ pages. If that leads to too many stories, then make it 100+...
If a story is well written, and more than 50 pages, it should trump a story with more pages.
Also, please bring the adult section back to the home page with the top items from it. That is the most active section of the site, and it generates a lot of traffic from google.

Separate Wiki for Adult Content
I don't really like that adult stores are so easily accessible for people that come here looking for non-adult material, such as that they'll pop up as random pages, or can be seen in "Recent Changes". Is there any interest in branching Adult content off in to a separate Wiki, and maybe including a link the "Adult Section" in the side-bar? --Holvard 19:56, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the majority of the traffic here is looking for the Adult Content. Removing it or trying to bury it in some way would most likely kill off the non-adult content. --Platypus 20:16, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
How extreme is the majority? As far as I can tell, this is the only active site to make free interactive adult stories, so if there's that much interest I may try to make my own. --Holvard 20:56, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Would it take a lot of work to put the adult content behind a disclaimer screen? As long as one had to go through the main page to access the adult site, it might actually increase traffic to the non-adult content, because people would feel better about, for instance, recommending it to children. People might feel more comfortable with the site in general if they felt sure that reasonable precautions were being taken. --LaedyRose 9 April 2012
It could work through account settings, and then it being disabled by default, and the option for parental controls. Maybe even an option (that would have to be enabled through account settings) so that only one account could be tied to that IP, and these settings, after being enabled, could be disabled via a parental control password that is set up with the account, that could be different than the account's login password. Issues With the Site
I've noticed that Create Your Own Adventure pages tend to load slowly, and the last week or so, accessing the site at all has been touch and go. Is there any particular reason for this? Is there anything you or we can do about it, or do we just need to be patient? --LaedyRose 9 April 2012
Lag of site and page load limits
Is there a problem? When I first started contributing to this site it could sometimes be very slow, but I put that down to traffic at certain times of the day. In the morning in GMT (when the Americas are asleep!) it was usually pretty good. Now, though, I find it's terribly slow whenever I use it, often taking upwards of thirty seconds to a minute to load a single page. What's more, not infrequently it doesn't load the page at all and I instead get a "Uncached page load rate limit reached -> 3 per second;" message. After a couple of those (even if I've only been on the site for ~5 minutes and loaded three or four pages) I get a request to complete a Captcha: "Page loads per hour hit - limit 60. Reset limit by filling in this captcha:"
It seems that it's trying to load pages multiple times when I access them? That might explain why it's being so slow, too.
- There is indeed a problem: link spammers. RobKohr has had to deliberately slow down site responsiveness and include that captcha in the hopes of frustrating the spambots so maybe they'll go away and leave us alone. The messages you're seeing aren't because you're trying to load more than 3 pages per second. It's because the bots are trying to load far, far more pages than that per second. Do I like this solution? Not really. It's frustrating. Can anyone else think of a better one? --Platypus 14:14, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- You guys could require to creat a acc that is activaded by admin/mod to view the content, the login page should always come if a cookie isnt existing and the page itself could be a blank site with minmal text and a field to look in.
- You wouldn't even need to create an account to view the content (that would be counter-intuitive, since you want people to see it) but just to edit it. I know that's probably far from ideal because the whole point is the Wiki is free for everyone, but at the same time if it's being incredibly slow because of spambots then maybe it's a necessary step?
- Is there some reason that the normal solutions (for MediaWiki, let's say the Phalanx extension) can't be applied here? Spam is a rather indiscriminate reality of the Internet that sites are usually protected against without crippling themselves and hoping spambots will get frustrated and go away. They won't, but the users will. --KC Riley 13:06, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
Linking pictures problems and other errors
Hello. In my various writing I try to place links to pictures to enhance the story experience. I've been doing this for months and months but lately the site has been completely blocking my ability to place links. The first time I try to post a page with a link it will force me to type in two words to verify that I'm human. After I type in the correct words it will attempt to post the page again but instead I will get this message: "You can only submit one page with a link in it per 20 minute period". Because of the human verification process I am completely unable to post links. I am fine with only posting one link per twenty minutes but the site has negated any way of posting links as the verification process eats up my one post per twenty minutes. As someone who uses the site often this is a major inconvenience.
Furthermore, if the human verification process doesn't stop my attempts at posting a link all the million of other error messages will. Errors such as site load limits or pages per hour or some such. These errors are never correct and seemingly random. I can stomach these messages and plod forward but they are a complete hindrance when it comes to posting links.
Please give me some assistance in this regard, I do not want to lose the function of placing links in my stories.
I have noticed this annoying tendency too. I tried to create a link to the CC-BY legal language, which is what I license my writing using, and find that, since I get the captcha thing, it blocks the link completely by telling me I can only do one external link per 20 minutes. So, it must say 1 time when I first submit, 1 time when I captcha and submit, meaning I can never do anything external. Like, say, link the CC-BY legal language for people to easily read the copyright terms, or provide a picture of an outfit I am thinking of, or whatever. Instead, I need to put a half link in so people can copy and paste, but not go to by directly clicking. Not sure how to get around this -.- --Dirty Me 04:45, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
Hiya! Are people still active?
Hey guys. I'm Bloody and I just joined the site. I've noticed the discussion board is a little old, and just wanted to see if others were still active. Guess I just need a little reassurance that I'm not the only one. lol -Bloody
Page loads per second hit - limit 2
Has anyone else been getting this message a lot lately? AgentVincent 21:32, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes. I have. But I wait about 2 seconds and hit the "reload page" button, and it works. -- Teejay
That page loads hit per second is extremely annoying. I'm a fast reader, and on short pages, it sometimes pops up. It does so constantly when I'm just trying to get back to pages inside of a story I want to edit or add more to. I also really dislike that "Page hits per hour" message. What's the point of having it? Maybe the site can do away with that? -- Sophos8
I don't like it either, but "throttling" the site is one of the techniques that RobKohr is using to frustrate the spam-bots that were filling the site with crap. --Platypus 20:21, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
It is driving me insane. I can't enjoy this site when everytime i click on another page i get this annoying message. I spend more time reading that than actual story. And i just got it when i tried to add here....
lol, you should try checking through stories to see if they should be moved to the pit. I see that message so often it isn't funny D: --Dirty Me 14:00, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
its annoying as hell it would be nice if it was raised to 4
How does one "frustrate" a bot? If anything it will cause people actually interested in this site to turn away. There has to be a better way to do this.
Image linking
Every time I try to link an image, it gives me: "You can only submit one page with a link in it per 20 minute period." This happens regardless of whether i add via hyperlinking or as a text url itself.
Any help would be very much appreciated. My only other option for this is to upload images to this site, but I'm not sure if I can or not. But the editing tools does support adding images during editing so... --Aelvir 15:33, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

So I'm working on a story called Three sisters in the adult section. I'm just wondering if anyone is enjoying it as of yet, its still a WIP and there is still loads of work to be done with it. Anyway let me know if there are things you would like to see in it, or anything else.

I have questions
Ive just joined but having been writting up my own story for months, i want to know if its possible to keep my story hidden from public until im ready for them to read it? Also is there anyway for me to revert unwanted edits by other users (to be honest i dont want any users editing my work unless its to fix grammar)? Blitzbear93 14:01, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Blitzbear93
- Hi,
- I suggest that you create a wiki to write your story, then you blank the page in the last edit. Nobody can read it when opening your wiki, but you can easily retrieve your own story in the revision history page (clicking on the previous archived version). You cannot really prevent any user from editing, but whether it happens, you have the right to make reverts, too, so you can check your work periodically if you are worried about that. You may mention at the beginning of the story the following sentence :
- Please do not change or add pages (unless you correct my orthography, which you are welcome to do). Thank you.
- Good luck. -- Girl Mamtha 20:10, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Linking to outside sites
So, I've been trying for over two hours to upload the first page of my my story. However, submissions with outside links can only be submitted once every 20 minutes, a common sense policy I have no issues with. My problem comes when the first submission attempt loads the page again with a captcha to prove I'm not a spam bot. Entering the captcha, I discover that triggering the Captcha counts as a story submission and makes me wait 20 minutes before I can actually submit it. Annoying, but okay. I wait the 20 minutes, hit submit, and discover that my login has timed out. I log in again to discover that being informed that I timed out COUNTS AS A GODDAMN STORY SUBMISSION. I went around this loop AGAIN, keeping track of the time in an attempt to not have to repeat it, with no more success. It should not be this hard to link to a goddamn discussion/writers collaboration thread on another website.
Oh, and hitting submit and being told you have to wait ALSO counts, so if you misjudge by one minute, you have to wait EVEN MORE.
EDIT: After another 40 minutes of trying, I have given up and removed the link. This Kraken shall be wrestled another day.
Is this websites community still active?
A few years back I used to frequently use this website a lot, I never had an account though. Now I want to contribute stories and etc. But I'm worried the hay day of this website is over. How active is this community?
Tapdancingfish- 2/19/2015 I'm still around and a few others, dunno how active the site is as I don't see updates very often.
New here! Started a story! "My Worlds"
I'm new here so I don't know if the site is still very active. If yes then help if you want with my story, My Worlds. I suck at grammar so help with that too.
Still seeing if people are around
Site seemed dead for awhile but you never know if people are lurking around out there. If you are give a shout out, if not, well then you can't read this.
-Noseknows 8:31, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
Oh man, this site was much busier back in the day. I really hope the website's community bounces back again, it'd probably motivate me to write once more and finish Remember. If not, i'll just return to checking in every few months.
-Heyoeveryone 16:17, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
- Seems there is great interest in reviving this site, or one that is similar, but perhaps at a site that is better maintained? If enough project participants were interested, you could request CYOS.wiki at Wiki.wiki (that's the URL) and have it hosted there for free. You could either start from scratch or migrate over any content of interest. -JOR 21:06, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
I want so bad, but I simply don't have the time to maintain it, I have a tonne of responsibilities I have to attend and I can really only check on this site once every few months. If this site got revamped or a new one was made sure I can definitely contribute and add more to my story(ies), but until then I'll wait till something happens.
-Heyoeveryone 15:10, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm new to the site and I'm thinking about writing a story but I wouldn't know if I should since the site looks like it is pretty inactive at the moment. It would be nice to hear from anyone who is active XD -Reer 17:15, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
I still exist in the ether of the site, lurking while not posting. Were my current personal life more conducive to writing, I'd be here more often. If anyone knows of a more active site, I'd love to migrate. It'd give me an excuse to find more time for writing. If nothing else, I'd also be happy to assist in the slow building of another wiki seeing as this one's main writer's community has disappeared. If anyone decides to go anywhere with this idea, head to my talk page, which I still check regularly. --TheElderOnes 07:11, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
I believe there'd be more people around if there was a way for others to know the site is being used. That content is being created, that stories are being read, that is. Some sense of activity that is clear to everyone, not just those who seek it, but those who are coming for the first time as well. --Darth Malcolm 02:36, 05 January 2016 (UTC)
I am currently working on some story branches but I feel like I'm only writing it because I want to get it out of my head and not for people to read it. It's kinda depressing :/ --dwarftopia 18:13, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
It is a shame indeed. There's always people reading things, however. Even the most unexpected of them. Rest assured that someone will always read your story. Granted, it would be best if you had a way of knowing, but I doubt it's coming any time soon, if ever. --Darth Malcolm 01:30, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
