"If you don't mind, I'll stay here and watch the food," you say.
"That's fine," Holly replies. "I wanted to get some fresh air anyway. I'll be right back."
You stand by the stove, stirring the contents of the big pot from time to time. Suddenly, you hear a high-pitched female scream from outside. Drawing your pistol and flicking the safety off, you race out of the kitchen, down a hall, out a door, and into the garden. You gasp at what you see.
Old Joe is lying dead on the ground, a crossbow bolt sticking out of the center of his chest. Holly is kneeling over him, her crossbow still in her hands. And Annabelle is standing over her with a sword pressed against Holly's throat.
"What the fuck...?" you say, raising your gun. Both women whirl upon hearing you, then shout loudly and accusingly at one another.
"She murdered him! She's the traitor! She thought no one would ever suspect her!" cries Annabelle, the muscles in her thick, dark brown forearms rippling as she tenses her grip on her sword.
"That's not true!" says Holly. "I was collecting vegetables when I heard someone sneaking up behind me. I turned around and I saw Joe about to hit me with a rock." She points to a rock lying in the dirt next to Joe's corpse. "So I shot him."
"She made that up..."
"No, I didn't..."
"Quiet, both of you." You tighten your grip on your pistol. "Let me think about what to do."
