"Ummm..."

You're not sure what to say to make small talk. Nothing comes to mind immediately! Suddenly, you blurt out a corny phrase you used to say around good-looking girls back home when you looked repulsive:

"I may be not, but you are HOT!"

Geez! Did that just come out of your mouth?!?!

The girl turns to face you and, with horror, you realize that you know this girl from your previous life! She's your cousin's girlfriend, Sara!

You met her last summer and you had your picture taken with her. She'd been grossed out by your face, of course, but your cousin had forced her to smile for the camera. You'd kept the picture and had lusted after her for the last 12 months, fantasizing about what you'd do with her if she were YOUR girlfriend ... and now she is right here ... staring at you!

She suddenly breaks into a nervous laugh, and finally says, "What did you say?!?!"

You just stand there.

"I'm sorry," she continues. "It's just that I know only one person who would ever use that line... and I thought you might be him, but I see that ... you're ... definitely NOT. It's just ... weird. Really weird."

She sighs and looks at you incredulously. "Does that line really work for you?!?!"

You finally speak. "Uh, not really."

She's looking at you like you're a weirdo.

You try to recover: "It was a joke. I just wanted to compliment you and ... something stupid just came out of my mouth. It happens sometimes when I see ... you ... I mean, when I see someone as beautiful as you."

She seems flattered, but a little puzzled.

You take a deep breath and remember that you are super good-looking. Trying to sound confident, you continue: "Look, I just wanted to tell you that you're very attractive. I'm new on campus and don't have many friends. Would you like to hang out sometime?"

She looks you over. It's a weird feeling, as no one has ever actually WANTED to look at you before. She looks impressed.

"What did you have in mind?" she asks.

You:

• say that dinner and a movie would be nice
• say you'd like to go for a walk that evening
• say you'd like to hook up
