It's a crisp, autumn day when you arrive in Riverside, a small town in a strange land. You are an orphan, you parents killed in a train accident when you were just a baby. You spent most of your life in an orphanage, until a few months ago when your case worker discovered that your father had an older sister who had been estranged from the family. When the case worker contacted her, she immediately agreed to take you in. Now, you stand at the train station, everything you own packed into one small bag as you search the empty platform for you aunt.
"Alex? Alex, is that you?" you hear a voice call and you turn to see a dark-haired woman waving to you. She looks a lot like your father--the few pictures you have of him, anyway--but she's wearing thick glasses and walks with a limp. She doesn't use a cane, though. She's rather tall for a woman, and thin, wearing khaki pants and a bright shirt with a garish floral print on it. She walks over and peers down at you.
"Aunt Rowan?" you ask.
"That's Professor Rowan," she says, "or Aunt Maggie." She smiles at you and adjusts her glasses. "Sorry, dear, but I need to get some new specs. I can't tell if you're a boy or a girl."
