Work Attire/You continue your escape

You climb the rest of the way out the elevator until you are standing on top of the elevator. As you look around, you see that the building's air ducts open into the elevator shaft. There's an air duct about five feet above you. You reach back into the elevator and help Edgar out. As the two of you survey the situation, you see that there's a metal bar just above the air duct. If you had a rope, you think you could loop it around the bar and pull yourself up into the air duct.
"Do you see a rope anywhere?" you ask Edgar. "I think we might be able to climb into that air duct if we had some rope."
"No, I don't," Edgar says.
You keep looking, but don't see any other way to escape. Finally, you have an idea.
"Edgar, take off your clothes," you begin. "If we tie your pants and shirt together that may be long enough to loop around that bar."
Edgar looks at you quizzically, but takes off his shirt and pants. Now he's just in his boxers. You tie the shirt and pants together, but it isn't long enough.
"We need to use your shirt too," Edgar says.
He's right, so, you take off your shirt, becoming completely naked. You tie your shirt to his shirt and try to loop it over the bar.
