You glance toward the desk and see the top of the girl's head peeking over it. You make a downward motion with your hand and she immediately ducks back into safety. You take a firm grip on the broomstick, adjust your stance so you can put more power behind your strike, and wait.

It takes a minute or two for the man to check the other room but soon enough he is heading in your direction. You wait until the very last possible second, when the gun is passing through the doorway, to make your move.

You step out and swing the broomstick with as much force as you can muster. You nail him in the head and send him into the wall from the force of the blow. He drops the gun, and slumps down against the wall.

You raise the now slightly broken broomstick up, and bring it down right on his head. The force of this strike breaks the broomstick in two and makes him drop completely to the floor, not dead, but unconscious.

"Is... Is he... ?" you hear the girl ask from behind you.

"No. He isn't dead," you say, tossing the broken broomstick onto the floor.

You can hear sirens in the distance and they are getting closer. Someone must have heard the initial gunshots in the church and called the police. They sure took their sweet time in getting here. You turn around and find the girl has come out in front of the desk and is looking between you and the man on the ground.

"Th... thank you... I'm... I'm... " she says, as if about to tell you her name when she suddenly freezes up. You notice that you no longer hear the sirens, either.

"You've saved two lives here today, even if you do not know it," a voice says, coming from the stairwell. You step over the prostrate form of the crazy man and head over to the stairs, as you recognize that voice as the one you heard when you signed that contract.

At the top of the stairs, floating there and waiting for you, you find some sort of spirit. It consists of a hooded white cloak with a featureless, black porclain mask where the face should be. It has no form or body and behind the eyes of the mask, within two white voids that take the place of eyes, you can sense a powerful malevolence and deep hatred for you.

"I thank you too, for your selfless act has allowed me to free myself from the bonds imposed upon me by my twisted, corrupt self and seal it safely away. If not for you... neither this girl, nor the boy, would live past today. And all the souls of the people killed here today would not have been able to reach the afterlife."

"So what happens now?" you ask.

"Now you have a choice to make. Do you wish me to restore you to life so that what happened here will play out the way it should? Or... would you like me to give you what you were denied, a chance to pass on into the afterlife? Please choose wisely, I will not force upon you that which you do not truly want."

You consider these options. Although you had done all this for a chance to live, is it really worth waiting until you died again to see the afterlife? You will have to think long, and hard about this decision.

The End: You have saved two lives, and a spirit, even if you were only aware of the girl. Now you must decide whether to live, or go on to the afterlife... but that is another story entirely.
