You decide that being careful is the right thing to do, so you walk over to your door and lock the dead bolt. You then lock every window in your house, and, satisfied that no one can come in, turn on the TV.
Around late afternoon, someone tries to open your door. Finding it locked, they walk away, most likely to check the windows. You have the TV turned off, and go to get your pistol from your room. By the time you get back, they're trying to break down the door. You feel confident, so you think about waiting for the door to break down or even going to sleep. But there's also the the reasonable side of your mind, telling you to shoot through the door and run away. It's practically screaming at you to go and find a place to hide.
