Your mother motions for you to sit, and you make your way to your seat. You feel alien and out of place among your young family again. You realize that today must be a Saturday, because everyone's home.
Before you can think too much, your mother brings over a plate of food for you and ruffles your hair with the same hand she sets your plate down with. You can't help but feel overjoyed, especially after the twenty years you spent alone and dying. You look down to see pancakes, eggs and sausages. You dive in hungrily and wolf the food down. Since you've been sick, you've been deprived of simple pleasures like this and you feel your young body getting stronger from eating. You finish before your mother has a chance to sit down and she smiles at you.
“My, my, someone's hungry.” Your mom says with a smile.
“Easy there Kevin.” Your dad says without looking up from his paper.
You observe your family in silence and help yourself to a second of serving of food.
“So, Kelly, Kevin, have you two finished packing up for tomorrow?” Your mother asks you and your twin.
You remember now that this must be one of the last days before you went off to college. Probably one of the last days you were happy before the series of small but avalanche-like events caused your life to turn out so poorly.
“Yeah, I think so.” You answer, completely unsure. Your twin gives roughly the same answer, but before your mother could reply, you're rudely interrupted by a noise.
“Daddy, can I have fifty dollars to go to the mall?” Abby asks, batting her eyes at your father. Without speaking or looking up, his hands search his pocket for his wallet and then he holds up a fifty. Your sister, who was already making her way to him the instant she finished asking, pockets the fifty and kisses your father on the forehead.
“Love you daddy.” Abby calls out as she makes her way to her room.
Annoyance and anger flushes through you as your brother, Fred, gets up and leave.
“Freddie? What are you going to...” Your mother starts and then her voice trails off as Freddie walks away.
Your father gets up to peck Judy on the lips. “Thanks for the breakfast, I'll be in my study, honey.”
Your mother sighs and collects most of the dishes and walks over the sink.
Just like a typical day in your childhood, you've been ignored again. You turn to your twin and your eyes meet. She shrugs at you and gets up slowly to leave, uttering a “Thanks, Mom,” as she passes your mother.
But with your day freed up, you can explore your childhood home. Do you...
